1997 Acura CL 3.0 Reliability

I am thinking of buying a 97 Acura CL V6 with 127K, but concerned about the automatic transmissions. Correct me, the 97 Acura CL had the same transmission as the 97 Accord and pretty much is the same car. Would you consider it a safe bet in buying it?

3.0CL had the same engine as the 98-01 V6 Accords.
Not the best transmissions, but other than that is a very solid car.
Drives pretty smooth and has a luxury feel to it...

i was helping my dad swap a 01 accords auto tranny when his buddie felt it started to slip. got a new tranny, and changed one of the soleniods, its the same shit, just a different day. cb and cds autos ftfw!

Im sure owequitit will have some insight.....but from what I understand the transmission did have problems....but not if you kept on top maintenance.....if the transmission fluid was changed regularily then really there shouldnt be any major issues with it

I think other than the transmissions though they were fairly solid cars.

I used to have one before I put it off a bridge and I loved it. I will still someday buy me another one. Heated leather seats and mirrors, v6, climate control, moonroof, and it has a decent (bose) stereo stock. Shiitttttttttttt. Get it man you won't regret it.

I'm pretty sure auto failures are lack of maintennance.

As you know, there are only a few 97 CLs for sale, this car is in high demand and will sell quickly. I wish it were a 4 cylinder.

i would not mess with it, my wife has a 98 accord with the f23 and the transmission is gone, it started slipping back in 06, it was slipping for a year and now its gone for sure, it seem like honda changed their auto tranny suppliers or something for the 98-02 accords, cause i know the cds and cbs are pretty good, but for 98-02 the worst, i will never buy an auto honda again, it seems like they all have an internal tranny filter, not an external like american cars, which means that to change the filter you have to take the transmission apart, thats good for honda cause they get more business but its bad for me, even if you change your atf regularly, the filter will keep getting dirty, so its just a matter of time before it fails

Transmission should be the only issue. And if cared for right it can last a long time. If it shifts good when you buy it add an external cooler to it.

I havent heard of many people having issues with the 4 cylinder transmissions....My dad has an 02 with an auto and hes had no problems at all

Did you buy it used?

It is pretty widely acknowledged that honda shit the bed on the 6th gen accords (compared to the other generations anyways) though

yep sure was used, i doubt the previous owners EVER changed the atf, it had 150k and i bet it was all on original fluid, but we are getting it rebuilt and getting a bigger tranny cooler and maybe sell it

Ok,

I checked and drove the car. Its not mint, but decent. The engine is dusty and needs to be wiped down. The timing belt was replaced and no work needed yet. I only drove it on the side streets, but the shifts were smooth and not too jerky. Is it the same automatic transmission on the 97 Honda Accords? The asking price is $3500, but $3200 seems realistic. KBB has the price about $400 more than the 4 cylinder.
