the wrx is a td04hl or something like that. kinda small, well my wrx is at least.
the sti is vf39 for a 04-05, and i think they made a switch to vf43 in 06. someone please correct me if im wrong. the 39 has the infamous w/g hairline crack that doesnt affect performance.

I had an 04 STI that i owned they are fun but expensive to fix so if you wanna play you have to pay I had a cat-back Apex'i exhaust one of the best first mods is an exhaust, then you can go with upgraded air filter its not worth gettin an intake they dont do much....... after that a front mount helps then a tune like UTEC etc or somethin in those lines easy power with those simple upgrades
exhaust easily $500+
Piggy Back or ECU tuning $500+
Filter $50+
front mount $300-500

You are correct about the intake. No intake really helps until you're seeing some serious power. I believe the consensus is that the stock piece is good up until about 350 whp. I personally have the SPT piece, which is just a noisemaker and lets me hear the turbo spool up a little more, and I can hear the stock bypass valve.
Interestingly enough Subaru markets the SPT intake and catback as a package calling it the SPT Power Pack, and claims a +35 hp gain. Most independent dyno tests can't replicate these numbers. Cobb has tested the intake and show it with a basic net gain 0 hp. Supposedly with a larger turbo, etc, etc it will help.
There's no reason to put a FMIC on a stock STi however though. The FMIC will actually induce lag on an otherwise stock car. Again, it's not the bottleneck for these cars.

My gf owns a 06 STi - prolly one of the most solid yrs available in stock form. 07's had issue with running lean, so I would be careful of searching for those. 06s had silver housed headlights and taillights whiel the 07 had chrome pieces. 04-05 were also nice - 04's had a smaller bolt pattern on the wheels and no rear fender flare pieces.
She has a simple stg 2 - intake, turbo back, ECUtek street tune - and the car is great. Fun car to drive and I would daily one over an EVO any day.
I personally love the 08s - prolly cuz theyre hate so much and you dont really see them around. Not really big on the new WRX though - even though its a great performer, it doesnt have the right look for me.
All in all, Subaru's are fun to drive and I love the cars

what dose a stage 2 setup run about $ wise and what kinds of gains could be had off it and a badass tune? i was thinking of getting a haltech unit anyways.

Stage 2...depends on what route you go. The full Cobb package runs $1875 which includes the AccessPort, and turboback exhaust. If you go after used parts, you could probably get into Stage 2 for closer to $1200 or so.

Using a basemap, you're somewhere in the 280 whp range, using Cobb's figure on a Mustang dyno. Approaching 300 whp isn't an unreasonable goal with a good tune with nothing but a downpipe and a catback. However, I'd rather tune a little conservative and go for a safe number. I'm planning on going Stage 2 eventually and have a 290 whp goal.
I mean if you're willing to try and max out everything you've got...I can post threads on Nasioc in the 330 whp range. It's all in how far you want to push things.
EDIT: Like Burleigh said, the 07 STi is very hit or miss. The stock tune on the car was garbage and people were blowing motors with under 10k miles on them. The car had to have the tune to meet EPA regulations. Subaru of America released an updated tune that was supposed to fix most of the issues, but it wasn't 100%. My understanding is that the car would run super lean under 4000 RPM, even at WOT seeing full boost. It would cause blown ringlands.
It's a shame because supposedly the 07 ECU was the best ECU to learn new modifications and it had the VF43 turbo. What I've heard is to get an 07 that hasn't blown up yet and then get it protuned.
My recommendation would be the 05 or the 06, with it really coming down to which front end you prefer.

I bought a used COBB catless downpipe from one of the forums, got that shipped for like $225, very nice downpipe. And I went with the Subaru SPT catback, got that when the local dealership had 30% off everything.(Came to like $360~). So its 3inch catless all the way, and actually is nice n quiet until youre on the throttle.
And its matted with the COBB accesport v2. I like it alot, best I ran was a 14 in the 1/4. But that was when I had 5k miles on the car, and I was afraid to beat on it. Gonna try for a bit more this year.
The accessport is the best thing out there IMO. Easy to use, nice display, CEL reader and erases, and launch control
As far as the car, I love it. Great in the snow too. My monthly payments are pretty ridiculous so getting the STI Limited wouldve been a very dumb move on my part.
And also the 07 STI Limited has the flushmount spoiler on the back, very sexy!2007 Subaru WRX Limited - Stage 2
