I have read this magazine pretty much every month since 1999, and unfortunately have the boxes of volumes to prove it.
I will say that it is nowhere near what it once was.
Scott Oldham took over as Editor in Chief and ALL they focused on was WRC and the Impreza WRX and the EVO. I am not kidding. I can think of a year or two's time where that is ALL they covered. That is the point where subscribership and thickness went down. It became a worthless read. Don't get me wrong, WRX's and EVO's are cool, but how much does WRC really affect the states, and how much do people really want to spend money to read about the same crap every single month for years on end?
I have thought a lot about this over the years, since it started to suck, and realized that the reason people read it in the first place was for the technical articles that they just recently started doing again on a limited basis, and the ride features, which always USED to cover everything from Civic's to 240Z's. They had 510's, RSX's, Integras, Sentras, Neons, Cavaliers, all of the cars that people in this market want to tune. They even featured obscure cars like the RX-7, the Isuzu Impulse, and even occasionally, you might get an NSX thrown in for good measure. They even covered BMW's and the anomalies like the Fastiva.
The mag was thick because the technical stuff was useful to everyone, and the cars covered were such that it had an extremely huge wide appeal amongst different groups, which in turn brought the subsribership and advertisers. They USED to be far and away the largest magazine in the segment. You could look and see what other REAL tuners were doing with their rides as well. It was just overall an enjoyable read. It very much against the trend of hating whatever brand you didn't have.
Just in last 9 months to a year had the magazine started to return to that format, but it apparently wasn't fast enough or soon enough.
