I actually think it looks okay. I like the lines of the body. Only thing I do not like is the headlights and taillights. Seeing newer cars like those makes me feel good I made the right choice on the GS350.

The overall proportions are better than the 350Z. It doesn't look as soft or bloated, and I am sure mechanically it is OK. It will depend on the performance I guess. Hopefully, it will be faster as the current Z really isn't special in that regard.
I don't like some of the details, such as the lobster claw head and tails, although they aren't as offensive as I thought they would be. Don't like the shark mouth front bumper either. With some minor styling revisions, this would have been an out of the park home run IMO, but like Honda and Toyota lately, they are just trying a little too hard in the styling department.

For the 370, they went back to the body shape from Z's of old, but threw an ultra shitty modern twist on the rest. As much as I hate to say it, why not go back to retro styling as the big American three have done with their flagship cars. It seems to be working, for those specific models.
What are the Japanese going to retro? The Toyota Corolla or the Honda Civic CVCC?
I think what it amounts to is that the Japanese aspire more to the Europeans than the US in terms of styling, and the way to be European is to blaze new styling trails that look like nothing before. Unfortunately, after you have exhausted all of the beautiful designs, you are left with ugly. The Europeans are having the same problem. In order to outdo themselves they have to add more lines, more creases and more elements to the styling. Audi is still doing OK, and BMW's only good looking car is the 3 series. Even Mercedes whose cars all looked the same for like 30 years, has gone way overboard on the business.
Mark my words. The next design revolution will come in one of two forms. It will either go further back to like the 50's or it will reintroduce simplicity. I think people and designers will grow tired of the stupid funkiness. I think it has already started to evolve back that way. VW's look simpler. The newer the BMW, the less "bangleized" it is. Lambo, Jag, Ferrari, Alfa-Romeo, and Lexus are all keeping it simple and attractive. Many of the new concepts look more aero, and cleaner. Of course there are still the ridiculous ideas from time to time, but I think they are starting to realize that it was getting out of hand. Not to mention manufacturing costs, aerodynamic penalties etc.
The real problem is there are only so many ways to draw a line.
I would have to play with the 370Z to decide exactly what I would change and how, but the headlights and tails would be simpler, perhaps some version of a projector beam in a tunnel, like the original Z, and maybe some horizonal tails like the original Z. The main thing that disappointed me on this car, is that I saw the same things you did, as soon as I saw the pictures. The original Z in profile. It was a spitting image. The shape of the side windows even. With some simplification, it just would have been awesome.
