How does variable cylinder management work?

the system where the car uses less cylinders under some rpm to save gas? Like the New Hondas?

I think that the ECU just stops certain cylinders from getting fuel and spark so it uses less gas, but the cylinender still has to move up and down, there isn;t a way to temporariliy disconnect it from the crankshaft.

Also would the cylinders wear differently? or is there some order of fire which ensures that all the cyclinders wear evenly?

like some random order of fire but all 6 of them will fire every so often.

i dont know of the variable cyl management works, but ud think it would be a weak point. wouldnt vtec-e be a smarter way to go? since the gains seems minuimal w/ virable cyl

pistons in the disabled cylinders still move

when cylinders are disabled, valves stay in closed position so that there is air trapped in the disabled cylinders which gets compressed and helps push the piston when it is going down

i think all cylinders will still wear evenly because the shut off doesn't happen for very long

sorry i wish i could explain in detail but i forgot it all because i only work on my cars anymore

VCM - acitvates and eactivates engine cylinders to meet demands for both fuel efficiency and performance.

"It uses a solenoid to unlock the cam followers on one bank from their respective rockers, so the cam follower floats freely while the valve springs keep the valves closed. The engine's drive by wire throttle allows the engine management computer to smooth out the engine's power delivery, making the system imperceptible. Vehicles equipped with VCM are equipped with an "ECO" indicator on the dashboard which corresponds to the VCM system's operation. Vehicles equipped with VCM also include Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Honda's Active Control Engine Mount (ACM) system. The ANC and ACM systems work in cooperation to cancel both noise and vibration that could occur in relation to the cylinder deactivation process."

During steady cruise the entire rear bank of cylinders shuts down. So the car is running on half engine with the benefit of less fuel comsumption. When speed is increasing it will move to 4 cylinder mode. 1st , 2nd , 5th & 6th cylinder are running. 2 cylinders on each bank will be run to ensure balance running. When max torque and power is required all 6 cylinders will activate to extract it's full performance.

Advantages of VCM are: Powerful engine , less emmisions & fuel efficient.
