ya, the old owner was fairly wealthy and to keep from having to diagnose the problem, they just swapped out the old tranny for a brand new one lol

but i got lucky, it was the 99-01's that were notorious for tranny issues, which Honda actually had a major recall on

O and for the manual thing, its not common, but ive read that some people have swapped in 5 speeds from the same year acura TL's i believe, but im not completely sure

The J series only manual tranny was 6 speed, and yes, they can be swapped in.

Take care of that tranny with regular fluid changes. I used to change the fluid in ours about every 10K, or as soon as the color would start to change. It had about 70K very hard earned miles on it, and never so much as hiccupped. They are not tolerant to neglect, and YES 1998 is the same transmission, so if you do not baby it with maintenance, it WILL fail. Don't be afraid to drive it though, that doesn't hurt it.

All in all, these are decent cars, and they really come alive at about 90 on the highway, which is when they get into the 3rd, 4th gear powerband.
