If you are getting an e36 the radiator will probably need to be kept an eye on or soon replaced. but I've had my 98 for about 5 years now and i plan on keeping it well into the future. you wont want to drive anything else after you drive the 5 speed. it is more than fast and you will be holding it back sooner than it holding you back. there are 2 noticeable power bands, 1 at around the expected three grand are...but. there is a "secret" power band (which i love) around 6 grand. most people are afraid to take them out that far, but the straight six is more than rated for those RPM's and there is no feeling like pulling onto an on ramp listening to her scream at 6.5k. instant love. I have the four door, the coupe i can imagine will be even more fun to drive. i have no complaints with the car and frankly couldn't be happier. good luck and hopefully YOU BUY IT.

That is probably going to be my next car. Maintenance is a pain, but I would rather jump off a building than drive an easy bake Corolla. I can't think of a better balance of performance, style, and price on the used car market right now.

              Awesome cars.

Small, but nice. The interior isn't going to be as nice as in most newer cars, but it is a HELL of a lot better than a MB, which IMO are overrated peices of crap.

If you know where to get parts (online) then it won't be bad to maintain at all. Overall, the design will be wholly different than what you are used to, but once you adjust, they are fairly logical cars. The straight six will make it a PITA to do anything major though.

Great handling, decent power, and they pretty much ALWAYS look good.

P.S. If I were you, I would go for the uber rare 4 door M3 simply because the 2 door M3 doesn't feel as substantial or solid due to not having frames around the windows. And I personally like the look of the 4 door better.

I know water pumps are an issue with standard E36 3 Series. The M3 may have trouble here as well, not sure.

If you do work yourself maintenance is not bad at all. I'm going with a e46 for my next car.. Non m though. Make sure you get it up on a lift and check the sub frame and strut mounts.

^what they said.. was close to getting one myself 'till i weighed the pros and cons vs. getting a new/er car and not worry about maintenance for atleast 5yrs (got enough maintenance work on the dd CB).
