My Rear Windshield is falling out.

    And I'm pissed about it..

Litterally the rear window on my Sentra is falling out of the rubber seal and it is sliding down into my trunk. The only thing holding it in place is the rubber on the left side and a little of the top but thats probably going to fall soon. When I drive it makes an annoying whistling sound.

My insurance won't cover it b/c the glass is technically fine and Although its a safety issue Nissan won't fix it becuase they can't prove I wasn't involved in an accident and b/c the Car is a 02

So i'm having a general auto repair guy that i know look at it tomorrow. if he can't fix it i'm going to have Giant glass fix it, unless someone else can recommend a good Glass place in SE Mass.

Also any idea how much $ this might run me?

You should end up OK since they don't have to replace the glass.

I would think it would just be a matter of replacing the rubber seal, and reinstalling the glass. Usually, it is the glass itself that makes the rear windows so expensive, because of the embedded defroster element, and sometimes the radio antennas etc.

I went this morning to a local shop where I know a few people.

They Quoted me $283... The entire window needs to be taken out cleaned and then put back. Plus all the rubber seals around it need to be replaced.

The seal that goes on the bottom apparently isn't made after market and needs to be ordered from Nissan directly and it cost $136. Its just a piece of rubber.

The rubber that covers the other 3 sides is only $22.

I realize it would be a lot more expensive if i had to replace the glass but its still $300 i don't have.

I understand, and it sucks, but at least it wasn't $700 you don't have, which is probably on the low side if the window had to be replaced as well.

          Do it yourself.

          Finish taking the window off.

The most difficult part about window replacements is taking off the old seal/rubber. It's a PITA when you don't have the right tools. But its still not difficult. It just takes a few hours and lots of patience.

You can buy the new seal/rubber at the store(i THINK you can get it at an autoparts, i don't remember). Press the window back on and you're golden.

I've done it to a few cars and they're fine to the day(my first one is still good since 04)

Val...I wouldn't go to Giant Glass...cause they're real expensive. I would look into the local paper.

I found a local guy in Middleboro once who does it out of his own home...unfortunately I can't remember the name of the guy.

Just to give you an idea..when I had my old 92 the front windshield was shattered and just for Giant or even City Glass (they're located in Raynham right across from Market Basket)..Giant wanted 250.00 and City Glass wanted near 300.00.

I had the guy repair for his price of only $125.00

Trust me it definitely helps to locate someone who does them privately.

The seals have to be ordered right from Nissan. I've tried every parts store in the area all of them say that its a dealer part.

and as for replacing it myself... i don't know if me and eric have the patience and skill for that.... I"ll have to look up some instructions first.

Henry - Im going to have giant glass give me a quote friday. A woman over there is a really good friend of my insurance adjuster/neighbor. she told me on the phone that if her guys looked at it and didn't think that the entire thing had to be redone then she would just have her guys put it back in place no cost. If they have to completely redo it she said she would have to charge but she would offer me a good deal. We'll see. she also said she's going to try to locate the parts aftermarket so they will be cheaper. Its worth at least going to see.

but i'm also going to be looking for other, smaller places. thanks

Get the parts and see if they'll reduce the price for you.

There's no instructions needed. Take the window out, sand off all the old gunk crap, put in new gunk crap, reinstall window.

                  Pretty self forward.

Installing a turbo is more involved and difficult.

Don't you know its impossible to work on a car without a DIY?

Someone had to do it first with no DIY to make the DIY. I wonder who wrote the DIY?

I went to giant glass this morning just for an estimate. They told me they could fix it in 20 mins for $75 so i let them do it.

They didn't replace all of the moldings but as long as it doens't leak (and its guaranteed not to for a year) i'm happy.
