I tried installing the restricted driver but that completely crashed ubuntu. So i downloaded the newest driver from nvidia and it says it has to be run as root when I try to run it in the Terminal, and well i dont know how to run it as root or anything im kinda noob to linux atm. Thanks!!!!

to run as root just type:

    Code:
    sudo <command>
What do you mean "it completely crashes ubuntu" when you install the restricted drivers? Something tells me you are not completely crashing Ubuntu. The restricted drivers are honestly your best bet for getting it to work.

You might also try AutoMatix or EasyUbuntu

To test if your card is working, type:
    Code:
    glxinfo | grep direct
You should see "Direct Rendering: Yes".

most of my nvidia linux installs in the past required me to install in the cli, it's gotten better though I imagine, but I imagine it's already been explained in the ubuntu forums.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

well it doesnt completely crash it, ill install the drivers but then after I restart it comes up with asking me which adapter I have so ill point it towards the Nvidia 8 series set my resolution log in and it will stick my resolution at 840xwhatever. so im going to fresh install ubuntu in a min and do what you said R33 thanks I was hoping you would see this thread hehe

Did you try just setting the res higher through the preferences?

ya but it only allowed 840x and 640x thats the only resolutions it would give me. I couldnt turn up my refresh rate either it was stuck at 60. im on a 19in wide lcd btw. and on a fresh install of ubuntu my resolution is at 1440x900 how i like it. and it only reads the video card as a AVG standard card or somethin<<<and thats after i tried installing the restricted driver that ubuntu wanted. sorry im a noob to this im wanting to learn so I can leave vista out. and just run a dualboot xp and ubuntu. I have the dual boot part down already its just the video card is holding me up .

Aside from resolution issues, if you do the command:

              Code:
              glxinfo | grep direct
What do you see? If you see "yes", you are fine. You probably just need to manually enter the resolution value you want into /etc/X11/xorg.conf
