    The new sleeper

So, I know a lot of people call my car a sleeper, and that sleepers generally do not look like anything is done to them motor wise and that they retain a clean, mostly stock appearance.
This is because cars that look like race cars are assumed to be fast, and oem looking cars are not.
    Now.
If it becomes the case that there are more cars that look oem but are fast than there cars that look fast but are not, doesn't the definition of what a sleeper is change?
I mean really, when was the last time you saw a riced out civic and thought to yourself, man, I bet that things fast!
    The answer is...
    You dont, no one does.
Would you be more surprised to be beaten by a clean car lowered on some nice rims, or a Fast and Furious style accord?
I honestly would be like WTF if some riced out teg destroyed me as opposed to a nicely modified teg did.
So, the question remains, what is a sleeper then and when does the overall perception change of what a sleeper is? Is it the bordeaux red cb7 with a blacked out fmic, or the bondo'd and 3 color primered civic you see that looks to have a fmic on it, but you assume its just a fmic style cai?
I say the riced civic is the sleeper, assuming it has the engine mods to backup the "racer" style appearance.
The problem is of course, these things are more rare than a fast, stock looking car, but then again, that just goes to support what I'm saying.

Sorry for the rant and the rambling, but it's something I have thought about many a time.

You are absolutely right. You never expect those riced out cars to be fast. But if you see a clean car with some wheels and just lowered or something, you had better watch out.

(Hopefully people think that about me, even though I don't have the power to back it up yet.)

riced out usually means...all apperance and non functional...I agree.

I have much more respect when someone builds a clean car that is funtional...usually it is not so damn flashy. I've seen a few that are a little flashy...but the functionality far outweighs that.

My motto...the more flash...the less fast

I see more cb7's in my area on 19, 20 inch chrome rims, it makes no sense. Of course, they're mostly used for show(audio). I seen a nice boosted civic hatchback yesterday and was shocked to even see how well-maintained it was. Most of the imports here are either really beat up looking or have unpainted bodykits with larger than the width of their trunk spoilers. I say never underestimate anyone unless you know for a fact you can beat them.

Well see, the new thing is; making your car look "all flash-no fast" so when he pulls up on you, you think hes just some idiot in a weak lil civic, but then when he actually blows you away, then youre REALLY surprised.

I think "rice" is a term to describe "wangs", loud fart-cans, flashy colors, and stupid punk kid drivers..

i like a balance of speed and style. If a car lacks too much in either department, you can tell RIGHT away

as for the sleeper...it all depends on the car. i'd be surprized by either to be honest. a riced out car that flat out flies is just as kool as a beat up looking car that can do the same.

to me, sleeper means it doesnt look as fast as it is.

ive already had people call my car a sleeper, completely stock, but my car looks like its been poorly maintained, (horrible paint, missing center caps) but the engine itself runs like new.

id say that sleeper is just "faster than it looks"

I had the intention of ricing out my old DX when I boosted it...

The best sleepers nowadays are minivans, wagons, and any old 4cyl domestic. People aren't surprised by boosted import sedans and coupes anymore.
