Do you have a harness for the HIDs, or are they plugged directly into the stock wiring? Get a harness, if you don't have one. You could be frying your wiring. HIDs draw less power than stock bulbs when warmed up, but while warming up they draw nearly double. Your system isn't made for that (speaking of which... I need a harness for my GTP! )

Do you have wires running from your ballasts to your battery? I have yet to see a "plug and play" kit that comes with one. Your stock wiring is not made for that much power. It will eventually fail, and it's not fun to replace.
The fact that your lights were getting BRIGHTER inside the car leads me to believe it wasn't just the alternator. I've had an alternator fail, and ALL lights go dim. I'm sure it's part of it, but certainly not all of it. Get a harness.
This is what you need. This price is actually damn good as well (about to order one myself!)

Ok, higher RPMs = brighter lights does suggest alternator. You didnt' say that before.
Still... GET A HARNESS!
Totally unrelated to this problem... your HIDs drawing all that power though the stock wiring will fry the wiring in time. It's not made to pass that much current. Get a harness, like the one I linked to. One that draws power directly from the battery.
The HID setup that I have would plug into the stock wiring harness as well. It too is "plug and play"... Still, just because it'll go in without a harness doesn't mean it won't cause damage.
