And yeah, everything pictured so far is a scooter. A moped has a motor and pedals... hence the name. A scooter usually costs more, but they're a lot more... adult.

I'm thinking of buying an old motorcycle. Something that needs a little work (but not too much... I'm lazy). I don't like riding on or in something that can't get out of it's own way. If I have to move, I want to be able to! Nothing smaller than 250cc on a two wheeled vehicle is going to do that for me.

I usually see moped as the general classification for small motorcycles, scooters, or motorized bikes.

Anyways, who cares; they don't make much "mopeds" anymore

Also, I'm not going to be on the highway, just a "fast road"(55mph road). There's lots of hills and I don't want to be hit by someone doing 70mph while chugging along at 45mph.

I'm not worried about the Cali smog laws since I live in NC, so I'll probably go look for a Vespa and see if there's any in good condition.

They make plenty of mopeds. A moped is a bicycle with a motor on it. Without the "ped" part, it's not a moped. That's like calling every modified compact car an "import"... even if it's a Ford Escort or Chevy Cavalier.


If you want to go faster than 35mph, get a small motorcycle. Honda Rebel would be a good choice, and they're fairly inexpensive. $3000 or so brand new, $1000 if you look for a used one. My friend has one, and it's actually a pretty nice looking bike. Sounds decent as well. Bikers won't respect you, but you'll be safer on faster roads than on a scooter, and you won't look nearly as funny.




Edit: Ok, from further research, I do see that "moped" is an acceptable term for any low-speed motorized vehicle... still, it's an inaccurate one at that!

You can buy a new one for close to 3500.00 retail price, plus they remodled them this year.

Just a grand more than the Yamaha Zuma. plus 200 more cc and you will be able to get on the highway legally.

They had bigger ones, but cost like $5000. I'm not spending that much on a freaking moped/scooter.

First off:

*Mopeds are bicycle setup with pedals and motor (see the movie Hot Rod that came out this year for an example)

*Scooters are what is currently available by Yamaha, Honda, Vespa, Piaggio, and Suzuki.

The Zuma (called the BW's outside the States) won't hit 60, but it'll hit about 35 and that's about it. It has a carbeurated two stroke 49cc single cylinder engine, but it has auto oil injection with a light on the gauge so you know when the oil needs to be topped off. Expect somewhere around 80-90mpg realistically. Fat tires, dual headlights, and aggressive profile come standard on this small scoot. Comes with a 1 year factory warranty and up to 4 years on factory extended warranty for about $2200 new (extra cost for the extended warranty from Yamaha). The Zumas are very popular in the scooter community and I've considered purchasing one as a toy. There are also aftermarket performance parts for the Zuma, which can make it surprisingly quick, and there is a simple kit to illuminate both headlights at once instead of just one for low and both for brights (see www.zumalights.com for the kit). I recommend the Zuma above most other 49cc two and four stroke scooters.

*Most states will allow people with a regular Class C license run anything that is 49cc's or smaller without having to have a motorcycle endorsement.

The Yamaha Majesty (400cc) will top out at almost 95, and the Yamaha Morphous (250cc) will top out at almost 75. Expect most 125-150cc scooters to get to a top speed of 55 to 60 flat out. A Majesty can out accelerate and outrun many traditional motorcycles. My girlfriend and I are intending to pick up a pair of Majestys with the top case, wind deflectors and touring windscreen accessories as soon as we finish paying off our 02 Escape this year (think: profile of a Gold Wing and can be mistaken for one at a distance).

Stay away from cheap Kymco and other Chinese-made scooters even if they look cool and are comparitively inexpensive, as there is not much dealer support and nobody wants to repair them.

Remember, you get what you pay for with a scooter or bike.

I vote for the older Honda Rebel. You know Honda is good (and their motorcycle heritage goes back further than their cars... they started with bikes). Grab one for about $1000, and learn how to fix it when it breaks. They're pretty simple machines.

Over here, when you buy a Chinese/Taiwan scooter, you get another one for free! Parts bike right there.

Scooters are way crazy here. They reach speeds of up to 140km/h depending on how shiny your brass balls are.

when the gas prices started soaring two years ago, i was actually looking into getting a scooter since i didn't live too far from work. eventually i just dropped 400 bucks on a Trek mountain bike which serves me well.
