GoldenEye 007, the classic N64 shooter that I'm sure many of you have played back in the day, is being redeveloped by Rareware for a 10th Anniversary release on Xbox Live Arcade. However, its currently standing in developmental limbo, as Microsoft was unable to reach a payment agreement with the original publisher, Nintendo.
Its set to have updated textures and some revamped models (not many, in order to preserve the retro-ness of the game, but just enough to make it pop a little bit on today's HDTVs) with the ability to switch back to the original N64 graphics (presumably in a pause menu or with a button press), and most importantly the inclusion of online multiplayer!
here's a screenshot, taken from mundorare.com:
Unfortunately, due to an incredible amount of licensing hurdles, the game may not get released. It was developed by Rareware between 1995 and 1997 for release on N64 while Nintendo owned Rareware AND purchased the James Bond license for GoldenEye. It was originally going to be a SNES game!
Between 1998 and 2003-ish, EA bought the Bond license from MGM and produced a bunch of Bond games, but I don't think any of them came close to how awesome GoldenEye was. Maybe it was because it was such an incredible game for the time, or how well polished it was. I don't know. I'm just a HUGE Rareware fan. But I digress...
Nintendo sold Rareware to Microsoft in 2002 for 386 Million.
Activision currently owns the Bond license, and were willing to publish it jointly with Microsoft for XBLA.
However, GoldenEye's CODE belongs to Nintendo, as Rareware developed the game for Nintendo as a second party. The game itself still belongs to Nintendo.
They just don't want to let it go because they want to release it on their own download service on Wii, the Virtual Console. Both Nintendo and Microsoft know they can make a hefty profit through its re-release.
Here's a leaked video of the game in action:

in one of the links i posted above, the one hosted on The Rare Witch Project, http://www.rarewitchproject.com/?id=1614, there is a link on that page that will take you to an online petition that you can sign if you want to see the Xbox 360 version released. i can't stress enough how important petitions are, ESPECIALLY in the gaming industry. after all, its a business, and companies will sell what people WANT to buy.
furthermore, if you're still a die-hard GoldenEye fan, be sure to check out these sites:
