I know. If I feel attacked, I'd just ban you

I probably wouldn't mod a GT-R... the new one. I probably wouldn't ever want to own one. It's too... exotic. I like the R32-33-34. I don't know if I'd mod one of those, simply because I think it's beautiful the way it is, and I wouldn't want to compromise the driveability. Unlike an exotic Italian car, I'd drive the piss out of a Skyline GT-R!

I agree with the NSX. I'm in the same boat with that as well. The NSX is a little more commonplace than the new GT-R to me, but still a bit more exotic and purpose-built than the Skyline GT-R. I think a stock, or near stock, Skyline GT-R would be a very sensible daily driver, as well as a fun sporty car (along the same lines as the STi... only, unlike the STi, the Skyline GT-R isn't based on the low-end model! )

      Yes. I agree.

It was an everyman's exotic of sorts. All of the pro's, with none of the cons, and they are just SOOOOO sexy in person. But if you wanted to DD it, you could do that too.

Yeah. I must say, the NSX doesn't do much for me in pictures... but I've seen a few in person (there are 6-7 around my area... one guy is on his second one, I hear!) In person, they really are pretty awe-inspiring. Such a timeless design. That look won't seem old for at least another 10 years, IMO... impressive, considering how old it is already!

Oddly enough, the Skyline GT-R, my dream car, didn't impress me as much as I expected when I finally saw one in person. It was at HIN, and it was dark... and the 3 that were there weren't in great shape, nor were they very tastefully modified... but they were smaller than I expected, and fairly plain. Still my dream car, though.

Yeah, I remember the first time I saw an NSX in person. It looks so long, and just I don't know...IN YOUR FACE, but then in person, it barely came up to my waist, and was so much smaller than I had imagined. But that made all of the details that much more interesting. More finely crafted I guess.

I have noticed that about most Honda designs. You just can't appreciate the fluidity of the design on paper, although SCC did a comparison a ways back with one, and THOSE were good pictures.

What HIN are you talking about? The one in Philly that was here like 6/7/8/9 months ago?

Oh here's some quick facts about the NSX i read while on NSXPrime.com....reading that LONG thread about some guy posing to win a poker game or something and then pay for an NSX w/ 63K in cash.

Here's a quick statshot for all the Noobs:
With 300,000 views on this thread:

                1. Over 15x more people have read this thread than NSXs were ever produced (~19,000 produced globally, in all variations, from 1990 to 2005 when production ended)

                2. Over 30x more people have read this thread than the # of NSXs ever brought to North America. (of the 19,000 or so cars ever made, only about half made it to North America)

                3. The rarest production NSX is called the NSX-R. This was produced in limited quantities for track (but street legal) purposes in/around 1994 and 2002-2005. There are more people currently viewing NSX Prime than the approx. 250 NSX-Rs that were made since 2002. Or all NSX-Rs for that matter. The NSX-R was never officially exported to North America.

                4. One person has hand-built all NSX engines since 1990. The 2002+ NSX-Rs have balanced & blueprinted engines, and there is speculation that all 2002+ NSXs have balanced & blueprinted engines given their slightly superior dyno results.

                5. The NSX was the first production vehicle to use an aluminum chassis, suspension, and body panels in order to save weight. Those aluminum parts, as well as almost all others, were hand assembled on pushcart dollys for each NSX.

                6. Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1, owned an NSX and has publicly commented on it being the basis for parts of his supercar.

                7. There are members of NSX Prime that have over 300,000 miles on their NSXs. In 1996, the NSX won a long term reliability award alongside a Lexus (can't remember where that came from... C&D, Motortrend, one of those...)

somewhat of a double standard, but i see where he's coming from

i guess now we can REALLY consider the GT-R a exotic now

I knew most of those facts, except for the one about the guy building engines. I knew they were hand built, and that 1 person built each engine, but was it like a couple people that built engines, or was it litterally one little Japanese guy that built every single NSX engine? Because that guy is a badass if it was.

Another interesting fact, apparently, due to McLaren's affiliation with F1 through the 80's and 90's (perhaps the most potent combo in history), Gordon Murray apparently approached Honda to build the engine for the McLaren F1. Honda didn't feel it was necessary, and declined the job, which then in turn led to Murray approaching BMW.

I wonder how that would have changed the perception of Honda.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I am REALLY curious to see what kind of headroom this GT-R engine has in it. I am thinking that it might be slightly underrated stock, just based on the performance figures for such a big, heavy, AWD car. I wonder if they will find 1000HP stock block to be feasible. That would be awesome if they did.
