    powdercoating......info needed!!

I bought an old 85 DYNO bmx bike; flat black, white mags, blue tires....

I'm thinking about painting the frame, and powdercoating came to mind. Does anyone know anything about powdercoating?....like how hard is it? I know that if I painted the frame, it could possibly chip. But powdercoating is different right?

I'm just looking for some info from people that have done it, other than "wiki" and "how things work", lol.

    Thanks.

I'm looking to get a setup myself. Just get or build an oven large enough to bake the bike, and you're set. The actual powdercoating tools are relatively inexpensive (can't speak for the quality, though... I was going to spend about $120 on a gun)

I've personally never powdercoated, but it can be done on just about anything thats metal. THere was a local person on craigslist that offered to powdercoat bicycles, i would do a local search see if theres anyone in the area. I think your only difficult task would be find an oven bike enough to bake it in

you can chip either one, but powder coat is far more resistant to chipping than paint. powder coating is also more resistant to chemicals, scratching and scuffing. it's also non-porous, so moisture can't get to the metal after it's been coated, unlike paint, which is porous. powder coat is basically pulverized plastic that has paint pigment in it. once you put it in the oven, heat causes a chemical reaction with the powder. it turns to gel, then cures and bonds the the metal.

the coating or process? coating a part is pretty easy, you can do a part in about 45 mins including prepping and baking. the coating is harder than paint also.

I'm not really into any kind of bike, I'd just like to paint this oldie. I got it for real cheap so I'm thinking about fixing it up.

And yeah I guess the powder coating process wouldn't be too hard, I'd just have to be meticulous with the sanding and preparation so it'll turn out good.

try eastwood .com they have a powdercoating system that might work the only problem that i see is i am assume you going to do the frame as well as the forks etc, and the frame wont fit in an oven ,so you would have to use a hi temp heat gun ,I only wonder by useing the hi temp heat gun if that would effect the quallty of the finish after the fact .because you are applying uneven heat.I dont know maybe I am looking at it wrong
