So...i want to convert the cb7 for rally

ive been thinking up of this crazy idea of converting it into a rally/offroad vehcile. ive been straying to the off road side aka rock crawling, pre-running and stuff like that but i really like the cb7.

our project car was gonna be for track but its only mildly modified.

we still have some stuff to strip on the interior and a 6 point cage is going into it. all the safety equpiment is still FIA approved and will be for scca as well.

Im just pondering about the suspension setup. For pre-runners they have Long arm suspension travel and they run IFS in the front and most likely the solid axle in the rear. I was thinking about a custom coilover system with a custom spring rate for rallying. if i need more ground clearance i can fab up some spacers that go in between the strut tower and chassis but then i will need to correct the camber.

i can cut half the bumper off, right below the turn signal lights and then fabricate a skid plate/brush guard and then a bull bar with the necessary lights.

one of my goals now is still keep it street legal. the motor in it right now is pretty good, f20A...basically a destroked f22 which will allow me to buzz higher than normal. Apexi WS1 for keeping sound down and probably an aftermarket ECU and computer management so it can be tuned for smog purposes.

and if i really have money, a rebuilt h22 which i will need to have bar'd and then smog'd but i dont think so because im still building the G23 hybrid.

i want to be able to run this thing from dirt to asphalt no problem and maybe just carry a first aid kit, safety and a set of tires in the back.

it really doesnt seem too far fetched because the vehcile is going to be headed in that direction anyways (of being stripped, cage'd and race prepped)

it will be funny seeing the thing being auto-xed

basically check out the civic in the honda tuning article online

Well rally drivers prefer a lot of roll in there suspension setups surprisngly. I read an article about WRC people setting up there suspensions I need to find that damn article again. Dunno if that would just apply to an fwd car since most of them were awd.

Yeah the roll allows them to weight shift easier so they can do those acute turns.

Yeah, a car that's as stiff as a board won't fare well on a rough rally course. You'd have 2 wheels off the ground most of the time, and things would probably break. A soft yet responsive suspension is needed for rally.

And yes, FWD cars CAN compete. AWD is best normally, but FWD will work.

good point, i was actually thinking about that last night and with trucks. they sit at a very normal height but the travel is pretty deep.

either way, id think i would want custom spring rates or start doing research on spring rates for coilovers already out there.

but yea, FWD does work...check out the peugot 306 maxi

these cars are actually fairly low to the ground, i was thinking more along the lines of a lifted suburu Ute.

Yea they are low. The suspension they use have shock travel adjustment and rebound. Pretty interesting. So when they hit jumps they dont bounce all over the place the suspension absorbs it gradually.

FWD works well because of its under steer characteristics, and the ability to point the wheels in the direction u want to go and pull your self out of it.

The only downside to FWD is the fact that it has 2 wheels to get traction, rather than 4.

definately need an lsd, but I wouldnt let FWD stop you, there are many successful fwd rally cars

I understand that FWD will work. What I was thinkin was that the roll dynamic would cause a little too much understeer for the fwd car (too much understeer = lost time). But then you never know. Are you gonna be doing mostly dirt? or tarmac. Each requires a diff setup obviously.

wasnt there something to do about fwd weight transfer was good for rally?

obviously im not going to be jumping it or anything. i dont know of any events around here that i can enter either but it was more of a fun thing since i live about an hour from hollister.

im shooting for asphalt and dirt or gravel combo. like i said, i still want to try and aim for a street legal car. at least i wont get pulled over for being too low or having a loud exhaust
