Also aren't churches supposed to donate that money to charity or something not pay people? Or thats what I always though since they were a non profit organization right? Correct me if I am wrong.

People who work for and run non-profit organizations DO make money. The money paid to the owners and employees usually comes from private funding, government funding, or donations to the organization. Any services rendered are not done for profit.
