Trip to Costa Rica (Pics, no 56k)

I went back in July, but I was too lazy to post the pics, there's a whole load of them, too many to post em all, but here's some of my picks...

Just landed, our rental is a tiny car called a Daihatsu Terios, they're popular rentals now, I think its a 1.3l inline 4, 2/4 wheel drive, no guts at all, especially loaded with people and passengers on costa rican roads going uphill

Top of the hill, highest point in Costa Rica I think, on the panamerican highway, it becomes saturated with fog and the temperature drops to something like 40 degrees, crazy going from sea level and 80/90 degree temps

Small town, can't recall which, I think its San Isidro

Costa Rica has some big and strange bugs

This was our hotel room in Dominical

There was a group of like 30 16 year old kids down to play soccer or something and they all came in these toyota turbo diesel vans, and one of the girls decided to move the van that morning while everyone was eating breakfast. I don't think she had a lot of experience driving, but you now how kids always want to drive, even just to pull it out of a parking space.

I think someone left it in first gear and when she goes to turn it on, she must not have had the clutch pressed in...

So I hear the sound of a motor starting followed by a diesel motor and a loud crunch, I look over and the motor never missed a beat, but now its kissing a tree, she put it in reverse and turned it off while everyone else came running down to investigate

Poor girl, probably won't be driving on the way back

Dominical, as seen from the coastal highway, if you ever go stay away from this place called thrusters.....

This river has been, for a long time, only crossable by this ferry you pay a few colones to ride, but now they're going to build a bridge...ferryman is gonna be out of the job

Almost to pavones, our next stop, a lot of this land is for sale!

Lots of small, rickety bridges to cross in pavones, gotta center up the car right!

There were about 7 bats hanging outside of our room, they sleep during the day, but if you get too close they chirp and fly around to the other side

I thought they were cute, no one else really did

The famous Pavones point break, nearly everyone in town comes out each day, locals and tourists, so its the most crowded spot. There's still good surf further down the beach, but the point break is what everyone is here for. Pavones is in the middle of nowhere, almost no signs tell you how to get there and you have to drive for hours down crappy roads to get there. It's kind of like a secret in that way, and thats how they like it. If it were easier to get there, it would be much more crowded, there would be no seclusion. When you get there, if you don't surf theres not much to do, but surfers will drive to the ends of the earth for waves...

We stayed in La Ponderosa, excellent hotel, run by surfers, if you're ever down here, stay here for sure

Here's another shot of the break, on a good day you can ride it for nearly a kilometer. Surfers paradise.

One of these crabs killed a snake, or found it dead, and was dragging it around, fighting with other crabs and hermit crabs over its possession.

Further down the road past the point is Punto Banco, a small town, follow the hill up and you'll find Panama

Gallo Mas Gallo! y Gallo Pinto!

              Crop duster

The road that stretches from Domincal to Manual Antonio is terrible and really long, and it runs through one of the big palm plantations so a bunch of semi's are driving down it at all hours, and sometimes, in passing on narrow roads, one of them miscalculates and winds up in the ditch stuck

Last stop, Jaco. Gazing out the hotel door at the wildlife, and the lizards and spiders

                Jaco beach

There's rich people in Costa Rica, mostly American's, europeans

Leaving Jaco, on the good road back to the airport in San jose

Loud, talkative bird, if he looks a little frazzled, I think he was molting

Many of the bridges in Costa Rica are too small for 2 cars to go over, so you have to stop and yield at every one, and wait your turn. And if the truck ahead of you stops, and you don't, well this happens

Theres a long hill climb to get back to San Jose, the road gets perilous later..

We stopped to eat at this little Papusaria, and I thought this Nissan was kinda cool

I think I took like 1000 pics, so if anyones interested in seeing more of something, feel free to ask and I'll post more

Next I'm gonna try to upload some video, that will probably take forever so feel free to post now

Oh noes, not the Daihatsu Terios. We rented one of those in Aruba a couple of years ago. Too small for 5 people.

yeah, they're small, but they get the job done, next time we'll get the toyota rav4 equivalent, thats the next step up.

Nice pictures. I was down there less than 2 years ago. Insted of the pacific side though, I ventured to the carribean side to Puerto Viejo by bus from San Jose. I recommend it, if you go again. That is an awesome country, and the safest south of the U.S.A.

edit: Interestingly I only saw 2 CB7's the whole time I was there, and both were in a used car lot for sale. The Hyundai is the main car I remember seeing everywhere, especially the Taxi's.
