Socially, there are whole sciences that try to explain this stuff.

Fundamentally, most people have a social need to fit in with other people of their kind. There are a lot of different explanations for it, but the fact it is that it is part of the root core of social structure.

They do it with fashion trends, food preferences, and yes, cars.

      My opinion:

Through my eyes I wanted to be different. I wanted REAL parts, not fake bodykits and replica parts. Although I went through that phase (minus the kits), I found authentic parts to be much better quality.
Let alone, I wanted to stand out in my area. I didn't want to look like all the other typical CBs with big rims and Whap-Whap mufflers. And what better way to give your car a good look then Japanese parts for a Japanese car?

I agree not everything JDM is worth buying. Some JDM rims are as ugly as my big toe. I am NOT going to end up spending 1200-1500 for some ugly looking Mugens or Works. Rather put that money under the hood.

But OEM is so typical. You're not set differently. In my area, I'm one of the few JDM Accords. I am the only one in my town for sure. Kurobei holds down his.
I am not completely JDM. I have USDM and EDM parts on as well. I go for my personal flavor...and thats all that really matters in the end.

JDM may die in the next decade like neon lights, bodykits and decal stickers...
but until then, JDM will rain on us for a long while.

        Sadly you are true

See to the true car enthusiasts....there really isn't such a thing as a "JDM Scene"....The whole "JDM Scene" lingo was created by the bandwagon people and those buying these items to fit in with the crowd because they think they will be cool with a certain group......

I'm not even gonna bother getting into this cuz its a waste of time....BUT...people had the so called "JDM" parts on their cars since the early 90's....and this was mainly originated on Hondas/Imports by the Westcoast builders.....the only difference was the parts were more expensive and harder to get at that time because there weren't really any importers that could get them....

The reason why prices are so expensive now is because every kid that wants to "fit in" is driving up the prices and supply/demand rules the whole thing because the suppliers know they can charge whatever they want and people will pay it....any hobby/social group has people that try to fit in like everyone has said already....they don't fit in somewhere else so they try another thing....kind of like all the little EMO kids running around.....LOL

So if anyone even cares....you shouldn't.....build your OWN car....if you are so worried about trends, fads and other peoples cars then you must have complex issues and are probably one of the ones trying to fit in.

I'm sure some people think it's stupid to swap, or to even modify the engine instead of making the car look good(jdm or not).

What pisses ME off is people that thing amber corners are t3h 1337 JDM. Most people don't even know what JDM is, but they think its cool because they heard/read someone saying it like it's cool.

There's no way in hell I'd ever pay the prices some of those parts go for. I think some of them are nice, but the price isn't.
I totally agree with the whole theme concept. The TRUE JDM enthusiasts, that will shell out big bucks to follow a theme, are respectable. That goes hand in hand with the performance nuts and the flashy show car nuts. For someone to pay money to make their car as complete to their well-thought-out vision as possible is fine.
The irritating people are the ones that will spend a bundle on one or two JDM parts for no good reason... it's not worth the bragging rights unless you have the full package (which, in the JDM circle, it can be argued that NO USDM car can ever be "JDM'd" enough to justify the time... just import one!)
And again, the fake JDM crap that's going around is the worst... JDM amber corners? No. JDM projector headlights? No. JDM Altezza tails? Not unless someone took them off of an Altezza!

Also, "JDM" means "Japanese Domestic Market". JDM OEM is good. Just JDM is not always good. There are shitty companies in Japan too! For all the crap we talk on APC and other various cheapo US companies, there are probably Japanese companies selling stuff that's just as bad for three times the cost!

I agree with Joe (DhN). It's questionable why people would pay so much for JDM stuff that's no better than USDM.

Then again, putting money into a car is probably the WORST investment you'll ever make! Why do we do it? Because it's fun. We like it. If you do ANYTHING to or with your car for any reason other than your own, you suck.

Yes, and one problem that I have noticed equally but completely opposite of those that try to "fit" in, are those that assume that just because someone is doing it, they MUST be trying to "fit" in.

It is funny, because I have several very rare JDM items on my car, and I don't mention them, I don't talk about them, and I don't care if people recognize them.

I bought them because I liked them for various reasons, and so I put them on my car.

But a lot of people would assume that I am trying to "fit" in, and that is not the case.

I liked the quality, and the fact that they were still different, but subtle.

I have also had my fair share of problems with aftermarket stuff, and am thus semi afraid to stray away from OEM, because the quality and fitment is so good.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to when I build the engine to get what I want.

So then where does that put someone that puts a singular JDM part on their car in order to achieve one singular purpose?

Such as side markers making it look more European?

Or foglights because they fit the bumper better?

Is this same person then, not a true JDM enthusiast?

Are they a ricer, or a copycat?

Hahaha.....Thats why you just ignore the people that try and say you are trying to "fit in" with everyone else.....those people just like to cause problems and stir the turds so to speak and or some call those the "haters" LOL.....

But seriously if you know you are doing it for yourself it shouldn't matter either way.....you like nice things so why not treat yourself and build your car how you like it....and you don't need to say you have certain jdm items because the people into that will already notice the small details you put into your car without you having to say "hey everybody...look at meeee....i've got this and i've got that LOL"

Some build their cars with quality and care......some slap their cars together just to pile on as much as possible.....

All I can say is save up and do things right....everyone has their own personal budgets....but good things come to those that wait

I think that simply put, everyone trying to rock JDM stuff is a good phase. The reason for this is that it means everyone is trying to go for that clean look; show car quality and performance at the same time. OEM looking cars in my opinion tend to look nicer than wildly modified cars. Although creative and respectable its never been my style. Its a very unique seen limited to a smaller group of tuners. I work for bmw and ill tell you there is nothing like seeing that clean, RHD E30 m3 roll through the shop. Its sort of the same thing as a RHD cb7, with rare ass parts on it. Except usually i get to go for a ride in the E30. Ive noticed cb7 owners tend to be a little more possessive of their whips.

Its no secret that the US always gets skimped from all the cool goodies that Japan gets on their cars. Id like some intersection lights stock without having to buy them on ebay or ask some guy who is going to overcharge me for importing parts. Id like to have that shit stock. Everyone probabley would. Just getting those few honda parts to me is worth it just on the basis of functionality. Not everyone needs a bumper pole but honestly some people could prob use some intersection lights or what not. They are useful. But enough of me ranting. Those are just my thoughts.

just a trend, as stated over and over. remember when raving got really mainstream in the late 90's? then it died mainstream. remember hip hop or rap (however you wanna say it) when they actually talked about life? now, they say the same words over and over again. soon it will slowly go away. jdm will also too. but not for a long while. k series swap in civics, now a trend, soon it will be h22 in civics and k series swaps in cb7's then it will also slowly go away. Also a trend. remember, why is everyone into the JDM trend so much and willing to spend a lot of money for it too? I wouldn't know. Why are racers willing to spend so much money to make their cars go faster? I wouldn't know either. bye.
