A sports car is type of automobile designed for sporting performance. While opinions differ as to the exact definition, most sports cars have two seats and two doors, and are designed to excel at a combination of acceleration, top speed, braking, and maneuverability. Great emphasis is often placed on handling—the ability of the car to remain in the control of the driver under challenging condition such as when the car's tires begin to lose their grip on corners.

I have to agree with everything that Matt said.. And add to it, that more and more car companies are trying to expand their defination it include four door cars, Four door Skyline for one example.. Later

My accord is a real sports car. Its got H22 powa baby. LOL im jp
A real sports is usually 2 door 2 seat, but its main purpose is to excel in power and handling IMO. Its gotta be able to go fast and while going fast able to control the power. Pretty much a rephrasing of what CustomLowz said.

              Configuration is unimportant.

It needs to be fast, handle well, and look good.

BMW's M cars don't necessarily fit the mold of a "sports" car, but they sure will run with most of them.

Change my vote to power/handling/looks..stupid sneeze.

It doesnt matter what badge is on the car, as long as it handles and moves well and looks better than the average street car.

A car able to put the power to the ground, handle with properly without any stability controls interfering (mercedes has a system that tends to do this) Personally If I wanted a sports car I would get a Porsche GT3 RS. beautiful car IMO but yea. It has to balance out everything power, handles, looks, fun factor, and able to take abuse if taken to road course or track.

When i think of the perfect "sports car", miata is always the only answer that i can muster.

Sure its small. But it has decent power, and can be modded to be miniature beasties. Also comes from the factory like a beamer with 51/49ish stats on the f/r weight set-up.
The closest thing i can think of that would touch a miata would be the s2000. Only because its a smaller car as well. Just my opinion though.

The S2000 isnt small. It weighs as much as our cars.
