i cant get Ares to work for me for bit torrents or P2P.


i just got vista so i dont know what programs work and not work, but if anyone has had any p2p programs working on vista that DONT have spyware, lemme know.

I wasn't a fan of XP when it came out, and I'm only using it now for hardware compatibility. win2k was the best and most stable for me in the past. I don't think I'll ever bother with Vista.

It depends what router you have. Basically..do the following:

1. Figure out which port your torrent client is listening on

2. go to your routers configuration page. 95% of the time its 192.168.1.1, just type that IP into your browsers address bar. Enter your username/pass. On linksys routers, the default user/pass is admin/admin

3. Find the setting called "port forwarding", or its sometimes called "application and gaming" or something...again, this differs with different routers

4. Enter the port number from step 1 into the box labled "port", and enter you computers INTERNAL ip address in the IP box. Your ip should be something like 192.168.1.xxx. If your router is asking for a port range (eg...55555-55560), you can just enter the same port number from step 1 in the starting and ending port. you shouldnt need a range.

5. Enable this for both TCP and UDP if it has the option.

6. Save.

NOTE: I have VERY limited Vista exposure, i dont know if this is your problem or not. it could be the DRM kicking in. This should work with XP though.

Im running XP professional and plan NOT to upgrade to vista. Why? Why changen something that works to something that does not work. WHen I bought my laptop recently I told Dell I didnt want Vista =D. My friend has vista on his comp. I hate it. Its damn confusing to use and too much security bs.

agreed. If only there were a lightweight client for OS X that does as much as Azureus. Transmission is ok, but I like the options I get with Azureus.
