With the Ranger that is, I had one hell of a day today, I've been trying to get rid of my truck for the last month or so.
The truck itself has been in my family for 12 years, aside from a motor swap done over a year ago, it's been running great, I did my mods, had fun with it in the mud last October and goofed off with it back at the Feburary meet.
Everything seemed to be ok until this morning when I went down to get an oil change.
Turns out my oil pan is rusted. I went down to look at it and the lube tech didn't want to risk removing the drain plug because he told me that around it the metal is a bit soft, and by removing it, it would pose a bigger problem down the line.
So I asked how I would remove the oil pan and replace it, now the pan itself brand new costs a mere $54.49 from a local autoparts store here.
HOWEVER the labor to replace it? A staggering $1,201.45 according to my mechanic I go too for work on the Civic, he did the exact same job two years ago on a Mazda B3000 took him 3 and a half days with about 19 hours in total man hours.
How did he do it?
In a Ranger/B-Series the engine has to be removed (not partially but completely) because of the frame especially on a 4WD, the cross member for the front half of the 4WD system runs directly underneath the oil pan and not to mention at least 3 or 4 of the 16 oil pan bolts are located where the transmission meets the engine.
I got a qoute of $800 from the parts store that I went too and they told me it would take approximately 12 hours to do the job.
I originally wanted $3,000 flat for this truck but I may end up selling it for $2,500.
Its just a big fucking headache right now and its rather depressing as well, $2,200 dollars was sunk in it just last year for the low mileage motor...and now I give up on dumping another $1,200 in in labor just to have a $54 oil pan put on.
I just felt like ranting. I love my truck but I can't deal with this latest issue.
