    Slow download speeds

Whenever I download stuff with bittorrent, or utorrent or whatever...i'm getting really slow download speeds, like below 5 kb a sec. Anyone else experience this? I'm on DSL...downloading through IE i get over 100 kb a sec. Sometimes my files don't even start downloading in utorrent or bittorrent.

    check your ports?!?

Make sure your firewall isnt interfering with it.

Oh and maybe the most obvious, but make sure the files you choose to dl have enough "seeds" or clients whatever to support the dl or it will just sit.

All i have on is the windows firewall...I also have avast antivirus, Search an Destroy, and Adaware. Would any of those affect it? I turned of the XP firewall, i'm waiting to see if it makes a difference.

        its none of those

check how many seeders have the file..the more seeders it has..the faster it goes i believe

I just turned off the XP firewall and immediatley the speeds jumped up to over 60 k/b a sec...BUT i'm still having problems with certain files not connecting, even though they have thousands of seeds. I'm clueless.

do you have all the ports open on your router? depending on what torrent program you're using they require different ports to be open, so youd have to go to the isp of your router and do it manually.

i mean, certain programs have some routers having number of ports to be opened, like i.e. - WoW (world of warcraft) requires me to leave like 1200 ports opened for the Blizzard Downloader, lets say ports 2000-3200.

some torrent programs (i use uTorrent) require only one port. In theory, if your program requires multiple open ports, that could explain why sometimes you get fast DL's and sometimes not, since youre probably not going thru the same port every time. i dunno though, with DSL alot is speculation and luck honestly. Who do you have, Verizon?

depends on the router, im assuming Qwest either sent you a router or you bought one? Either way , you have to manually open and authorize ports thru the routers isp.
You might need to authorize Port Forwarding also on your router. Check this site out,
                      http://www.portforward.com/english/a.../Utorindex.htm

this is instruction for port forwarding for uTorrent, but the basic principle is the same. Only thing thats different is you need to find out what port youre incoming connection is coming to. You can find out within whatever torrent program you're using, most of the time is Options.

gotta be careful with azureus, depending on what anti-spyware and anti-virus programs you're running it will eventually bog your system down. I was running Azureus and had Avast! Anti-Virus, All-In-One SecretMaker and Spybot S&D and it worked ok for a week before it started interfering with everything, my cpu was processing at 100% like everytime i opened the damn thing. just something to watch out for, if it works for you then more power to you
