Anyone got a spare Dell Dimension 8200 Laying around?

Yeah, so for kicks I went to see how much it would cost to upgrade the RAM in my desktop, so I went to Crucial and ran their scan.

    http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner...bid=&pagename=

That's what came up. Yep, $240 for an upgrade to 1 gig of RAM.

It'll cost me $57 to do it to my new laptop.

So if anyone has a spare old Dell laying around and wants to rip the RAM out and send it to me, since I think it's oddball RAM, I'd be much obliged.

(Yes, this is a send me stuff cheap post, but I'm allowed one of those once and awhile, right)?

    It's RDRAM?

Shits expensive because/and no one uses it anymore, SDRAM has become the standard.

Cheapest I see on pricewatch is $92 for a 512 stick

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

      The infamous RDRAM

I had a Dimension 8100 series a few years back that I actually considered getting a new motherboard for. One that would support DDR memory instead.

I could get a whole new motherboard + more memory for less than the upgrade price.

I thought you had to put RDRAM (Rambus) in pairs? I'd just love to get it up to a gig, as it's getting old and tired.

It's a great computer, I've had it since summer 2002 and I've never even reformatted it from when I've bought it, so I'm sure it could be sped up just doing that. I want to make sure that I've got all the reinstall stuff before I even start playing around with all that. I also finally have enough data storage to back up all the crucial stuff.

I was just seeing if maybe someone had one of these computers with a fried motherboard and just didn't need the Ram anymore.

I mean at this point my laptop is faster, but coming from a work computer with a 3 gig Processor and 2 gigs of ram to a 2 gig and 512, I'm just greedy.

Oh well, it's still better than what I use at home. P166 MMX, 32 mb RAM, 3.2 gig HD. Not the stablest computer, but my mom still uses it for the internet.

I think you're right about being installed in pairs, I never used rdram.

It's gonna cost some money to upgrade there, so I see why you made this thread!

Bump from the dead. Anyone want to help me out here with something that'll make that computer run a little better?

My monitor's dying as well...the joys of a 5 year old computer.

Also, I've never reinstalled Windows in the 5 years that I've owned it, and I seriously doubt I have the original reinstall disc...would reinstalling it make my computer run faster/better?

Basically I'm trying to max out what I've got. It's completely original, minus me hacking out all the stuff from it I don't need.

My laptop is all well and good, but it doesn't have any of my music on it, and none of the storage.

              Thanks.

                defrag your hard drive.

                try to minimize startup programs

delete any programs you dont use anymore

                clean cache and cookies

use ad-aware, you might have spyware

OR just sell the computer and build one, easy and cheap. a nice system can be built under 300-350 bucks.

Put linux on it. and use it as a storage server. then you can stream the data to your lappy.

Linux annoys me, I'm not gonna lie. I'm not that hardcore into computers to try and get into all that.

I already stated it's got 512...I want more, and I wanted to see if anyone knew of a place to get ram for it cheap, since it's weird ram.

Upgrade the hard drive?...I've got 200 gigs internal and 250 external, space isn't my issue...it's speed.

Xubuntu would run that computer faster than windows 95 or later could ever dream. If your not using it for gaming, it really is your best bet to get the best performance out of your ancient hardware.

Get out there and learn new things. just remember there was a time when you didnt know how to use Windows, just like you dont know how to use linux.

                            Accordwarrior-

I just did a dual boot with XP and Ubuntu on my pc.

Now i dont have speed issues but i wanted Linux back as i use to have it before my pc crashed(unrelated)

With the help from Eric(AccordR33) i got it all up and running and ive learned how to use it and its an awesome OS. Unfortunatly i dont have the time id like to throw myself into it totally but i will say its got the drop on Microsoft without a doubt. The hardest part for most people i think is using the terminal but there are programs that help counteract using that.

Try it, you wont be disappointed.
