if you have ads/popups coming from the same address over and over, add that address to your hosts file.

Example, I get ad's from ads.doubleclick.net alot, so I added
"ads.doubleclick.net" to the hosts file, right after

"127.0.0.1" loopback, or if you have entries, add to the end of the file.

that will block anything from "ads.doubleclick.net"

Keep in mind though, that some programs, like windows defender, see edited hosts files as potential hijack attempts, and try to change it back.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

first off, I wanna say THANX to ALL you guys, especially head4life, which was my technical support agent throughout the middle of the night. accordaffair, and all u other guys, I greatly appreciate it.....

see, this is what happened...i was so fucking pissed because I had spent $50 a day ago on this Norton crap, only for my computer to get slower. I mean, the computer when turned on, would stay loading forever before i could click anything, or open a window. I mean, Im no computer wiz(u can tell by now), but there are obvious things. Then, when finally done or so, the popups kept coming the same way, i couldnt get into certain sites because some spyware wouldnt let me.

So after trying to tweak the settings here and there with the Norton, and no result, I got sick of it, thas when I posted here. I mean, idk about you guys, but w/o my computer, Id be miserable. I mean, I use this thing for everything.

Anyhow, I used Ad-Aware to find out out my computer was infested with shit. Also, have the Nod32 running, but not completely sure how to mess with that one yet...(ill figure it out later) Now I have Firefox running too, and its pretty cool...this morning I wake up, and NO MORE POP UPS! YES! and computer loaded up real quick too....i found like 2 frikin viruses hiding in the processes panel...shitt....its so nice

Ill be requesting some other help also...but ill let you guys know...

THANKS GUYS! Gotta love this site for these things...(wish it were more like this)

ps: Im getting a refund for the Norton, which is even better news..

I made that post before I went to bed, let me correct some errors.

First off, the hosts file can be found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Open the hosts file with notepad, or some other text editor.

To block a site you first add your loopback IP 127.0.0.1 then the name of the site.

Here's mine right now on this computer for example..
              # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
              #
              # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
              #
              # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
              # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
              # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
              # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
              # space.
              #
              # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
              # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
              #
              # For example:
              #
              # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
              # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

              127.0.0.1 localhost
              127.0.0.1 ads.clicksor.com
On my other computer I have many more entries. In Spybot SD theres an option to add a whole bunch of bad sites to the hosts file, like hundreds. I used to do that, however it uses up more memory, because, I suppose, the hosts file sits in memory.

If you want to try that method through Spybot Sd then see if you're happy with it, you can always delete the entries later on.

Just be sure to leave the first entry "127.0.0.1 localhost". Don't remove that.

I have the same hosts blocked...shhh.

I've had really good luck with just running winblows defender and norton though? :shrugs:

I'll have to try out the other programs as well.

This is one of the things you learn as you spend more time with your computer .

Every computer I work on has an expired norton trial that came with it when they bought it. And every time I uninstall everything symantec/norton and replace it with AVG free and zonealarm free.
