    Another camera thread

My girlfriend is getting me a digital camera for christmas and neither of us have any idea what is good. I've been using my mom's HP camera that she got free with a printer and it sucks, but I've been getting more into photography and want something that will take very good quality pictures.

She said anything $300 and under is ok, so I figure that should be enough for a pretty good camera to start out.

What camera would give the best quality photos for that price? Also I don't really know anything about like pixels or anything. But yea...I know there's a lot of members on here that are into photogrphy so I figured this would be a good place to ask.

    -Thanx

I don't know what exact words to search other than "camera" which is what i used and went through about 10 pages and didn't get shit.

here is another link that Tommi (Paokaolo) posted.

Ive talked to him a few times and he knows his shit.

There deff are some other peeps that know a fair amount about photography so you could pm them with direct questions. I forget their names but aznkid.com knows his stuff too.

yes, i looked all through that thread. It doesn't have the info I'm looking for, it's all camera's $200 and under. I am looking for a more expensive one. Like i said twice, I DID SEARCH! I spent about 20 minutes reading threads with answers to questions that I don't need the answers to. This is why I made a new thread...

I think I might be leaning towards the Canon a710 IS. I found them on Newegg.com but there are two of them with the exact same specs except one says "oem" and the other says retail. Here's the link.

                    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...NE&N=0&Ntk=all

is this a good camera and a good deal? Also what is the reason for the price difference between the two? I'm continuing to search around websites for different prices on this camera but so far nothing.

yea, I've been reading reviews on it on numerous sites and there are negatives but the posatives out weigh the negatives by far. Also Newegg.com is the cheapest I've found it so far.

I looked at that link. According to newegg, the "OEM" one is probably an open-box return, and missing the "accessories", whatever that means. Goto Canon's website and see what all an A710 comes with and decide if just getting a bare camera is worth the $40 savings.

For point-and-shoot type cameras I've always like the more "prosumer" kind, such as Canon's G-series. They are a little larger but still compact and have the type of features an SLR might have such as a hotshoe if you want to later add a real flash, the ability to shoot RAW, and fast glass. <<< That's the kind of capability that can fuel creativity, not megapixels, big zoom lenses etc. Learn more about them at dpreview.com or elsewhere.

A used G3 can easily be found on eBay in your budget and it'll have capability far beyond normal point-and-shoots that are new and cost more.

                          ************************************************** ***********

Today, camera makers are still in an idiotic race for megapixels with their point-and-shoot models. This is an extraordinarily bad idea because the damn image sensors are still so small. More pixels crammed into the same-size sensor means each pixel is smaller, and therefore less sensitive to light.

Less light sensitivity = more noise. Look at dpreview's review of the new Canon G7. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0611/06...ong7review.asp

The latest G-camera is now up to 10 megapixels, but the sensor is still small. Subsequently, dpreview notes that image quality suffers compared to the G6/G5/G3 etc. despite the better Digic III processor. This is what happens when marketing overcomes common sense. If I had an extra $400 or $500 (and wanted something small) I'd snag a Canon G6 in a heartbeat --- while I still could.
