I just started up on that hobby. I am in michigan, so there are some trails but not the best. My roomate got me into it. I bought a Pacific front suspension bike at Target for 80 bucks.... pretty good. He said that ones with rear suspension... are obviously heavier, but better for more experienced people. I rode for my 4th time today, did some pretty hard trails (12.5 miles). I would suggest starting out with something with just front suspension, and upgrading stuff as you need it. Be Aware though, that it will be another money pit like a car. Now I sit, rummaging through ebay, not only for cb7 parts, but also for bike parts, and now a Thule Bike/Board combo rack. But I am definately hooked. Just sucks that when im in Miami half of the year, there will be nothing to ride on.

I'm a street biker myself. I got run off the road, and messed up my back a year ago...so I haven't been back since. There's probably nothing we can tell you you don't already know.
Some good names I've ridden and liked:
Fuji
Bianchi
Peugeuot
Specialized
Trek
Mongoose PRO
The mountain bikes are getting stupid these days. Full suspension can hinder brisk acceleration and conrol. Unless you're doing downhill mountain biking or big-city biking, I'd stick with a hardtail, and go full out quality. Cheap is never good.
Don't forget a helmet. And hook me up dude. I'm in the market for a new bike. What brands do you retail? PM me.
Edit>>> Pacific...Huffy...Mongoose...Schwinn....Roadmaster ...stay away from. As for this being a money pit....negative ghost rider. If you buy a cheapo bike from Walmart/Target/K-Mart, you're going to have to have your wheels trued after every ride, and everything is going to rust in less than a year. THAT is a money pit.
Look to spend more than $200 on the bike alone, and only buy from bicycle shops. The more you spend, the better the bike. If you buy from a bicycle shop, they can explain the quality differences. For one, if you look at the bicycle pictured above, you will notcie the 5/8 nut holding on the rear tire (should be quick release). The bike is styled like a high dollar mountain bike, but is only capable of jumping curbs without damaging the rim. The front shocks on that bike are cheapo. Real front shocks (Rock-Shox) have removable METAL heads for lubrication and replacement of the shock spring to adjust the ride. Some are dial-adjustable. The ones pictured above have plastic caps (sometimes shaped to look like high quality asjustable) and function only to hold the rust in the cheapo-shock. The frame above is simple, with the much outdated and poorly designed "grip shift." Grip shifters have been deemed too slow for engaging purposes and hinders your ability to properly grip the bicycle and not accidentally shift. Therefore, good quality bikes use thumb-shifters that are of push-push design...they are quick, adjustable, and precise.
Frame composition should either be alluminum, or cromoly. Steel is crap. Shifters should be name brand. Shimano has high and low quality gear, so beware. Like I said before, buy from a bike shop, and ask lots of questions.
If you spend the money now, you will be much much less likely to have to spend money later to fix it. That's the cold hard truth.Last edited by Slateboy; 04-24-2004, 11:42 PM.

the fuel 100 retails at like 2500 (or ill get the 80 if i feel cheap) but without the markup it isnt to bad( markup on bikes is usally huge) . We mostly carry treks for moutain bikes and hybrids. We have some haro's and gt's also. Ive used to ride all the time im just going to start it up again. If your looking for anything you can. I spend most of the time fixing cheap walmart and target bikes people bring in, so im not going to get anything like that . What bike are you looking for. Where are you located?Last edited by ChIoVnIdCa; 04-25-2004, 02:40 AM.

yes, beleive me, I usually do things the right way the first time(buying the good stuff) But, I'm in college, and dont have too much money, especially cuz I currently own 2 cars. I just needed a bike then and there, and only really wanted to pay like 60. I know they should be quick release and all that stuff... but if I feel like it, I will just get new wheelsets for front and back. But it gets the job done for now... which is getting the stress of all my classes off my back.
