yea, not sure what happened but the lexus' and camry's started looking too much the same.
they have more or less been the same cars but now Toyota is cooky enough to let people know that they are selling overpriced camrys as a Lexus.
I like some lexus but a 8 speed tranny is just a next reason to overcharge us and make sure that the car HAS to be service at the dealership.

What, and it'd be way better to purchase an AUDI, BMW, or Mercedes.....all of which are going to need servicing before the LEXUS. I'd venture to say the other's are less reliable as well, german cars are over-engineered and too expensive to repair.
If I remember correctly, the new LS460 8 Speed is actually smaller and simpler than the outgoing 5speed, and is only marginally heavier.
Auto trannies are so complex anyway, that I don't think the equipment necessary to add 3 gears would make much of a difference.
Also, yes 8 gears is better for mileage, and acceleration, because it allows the engine to be kept in a better part of the powerband all the time.
It also allows you to leverage less power for better acceleration, because you can use the gear multipliers in your favor. The more multipliers, the more broad the range the engine can be kept on boil.
