question about shipping cars from japan

has anyone done this before? im thinking of saving up some money, and when i go to japan, im thinking of buying like a skyline. does anyone have an idea about how much its gonna cost for me to license the car in the USA? do i have to do anything to make it legal to drive? I know a skyline in the USA costs a bunchload, but if i bought a crapped up one in japan shipped it over, drove it my state, fixed it up, i'd be able to save a ton. let me know. thanks!

no not really...i think its safe to say that buying one in Japan(which is moderatly cheap considering they junk them around 35xxx miles), shipping it here(once it clears customs and they convert it to US Spec meaning windsheild glass, headlights, saftey and emissions) and you register it(which becomes another problem) and fix it up(considering you buy a junked out one) would probably be close to what it would cost to buy the new Skyline here in the states when its available.

I might be wrong...and i have been before but to me its worth it in some aspects but its just such a pain in the ass. Customs and the DOT arent easy to haggle and there is a lot more into importing then most people think. Its a daunting task. I remember reading an article in like SS or Modified or something where they imported a silvlia.....they had to import like 3....one to keep....one to strip down to the frame to prove to the DOT that it was the same car as the 240 and one to total in a crash test to test saftey aspects......when i read that i was like damn...3 sivlias....so if you buy each one for like 7 grand (im guessing) thats 21,000 right there not including shipping costs and fees/ registration blah blah blah.....

well thats all i know on the subject but if you think your up too it id suggest going on some websites and reading up on it and doing your homework throughly before jumping in!

    Good luck!

Yes, Ralphie is right, it'll be a biotch to get over here and "legal" for you to drive.

      Bah.

You need to know the right people, meaning customs agents, brokers, import lawyers etc. who can successfully ship a RHD, Slyline over without the US Customs siezing it and chopping the car in half. That customs agent has to be that good in order the car to dodge the crusher death.
See, the US & DOT doesn't want many, or at all RHD cars roaming the streets of the good 'ol USA.
The one safe way i know you can have a RHD JDM, or any foriegn car on the streets is by acquiring a "used car dealer" license and plates. This way you can drive the car on the streets because you are a used car dealer. Or another way is if you are a US Military personel. They have quirks and have free shipping or so of their purchased items, which include motor vehicles.

Other than that, you can save yourself a whopper sized headache and purchase a Skyline from dealers on the coasts: ie Florida.

Im sure you know how to search

Thats why mostly rich people ship those cars from up there down here because they got connections like that and besides think about it if you got money to pay cats off would you really give a fuck I dont think so. Most of the cats i seen in L.I with skylines and jdm supras and other cars the type no hype r they pull money out the ass and wipe it with dollar bills then burn it to see it go up in smoke and laugh about it.

Move to Canada. x1005743950346530975924 fucking easier to register etc a JDM car. And, find someone who knows what they are doing to bring in the car. Otherwise you'll get nothing but headaches.

dont do it yourself unless you have a good idea of what is involved. there are importers who take care of all the paperwork for you & the car will show up at your house eventually. from reading the gtrcanada forums it seems like everyone that the skyline owners meet seem to think they can get the fattest deal on a skyline. it dosen't matter if you got your jdm for mad cheap if it arrives and needs thousands in parts & labour. you get what you pay for..

                    REMEMBER THIS.

If you import a vehicle yourself you risk losing EVERYTHING. Not worth doing it yourself.
