Paying for a Speeding Ticket- With Community Service

So, I was going 70 on a 35... got pulled over, and got a 400 dollar speeding ticket. They sure don't fuck around in California... they are helping balance the budget on the backs of drivers. But... I digress...
Has anyone ever tried or heard of asking the judge for community service hours instead of paying the fine... since I have no money I am considering this. What do you all think?

but yes, ive done community service for a ticket, it was only 120 dollars, which was 12 hours.

Anyone else? Do they usually figure $10/hr... and can you volunteer at a variety of places? I have a job, but the money for my paychecks is basically already spent...
