Jack Hanna or whomever said, (paraphrasing) "Oh, he died doing what he loved ... " Well sure, but they almost make it sound as if he'd have been OK dying, as long as it was "that way." Whatever.

Fuck the TV show, the animals and Jack Hanna: Irwin left behind a widow and his small children have no father now! Little solace in that, if you ask me.

I believe it was Steve's close friend Jack Stainton who said that...but yeah...you have a point.

He died because of an electric sting ray came up and stabbed/shocked him w/ the tail straight in the heart. There shock is deadly, and a strike/shock to the heart would kill you pretty easy. Sad to see him go, but he was testing his luck w/ every fucking episode. He was asking for it.

        RIP None the less.

Sting Rays have venom of some sort, delivered by a big, stout barb that pierces and then does more damage coming out ... I don't think they have an electric charge like some eels.

Actually, the barbs can be very long. I caught about an 8" sting ray (not including the tail) and the barb was about 6" in length!

I heard the news yesterday, and it was shocking since I am a fan of him and his shows.

It wasn't an electric ray. Just yor average sting ray, with a 7" long spur. He didn't die from the venom, but from cardiac arrest caused by the spur entering his heart. Steve immediately took out the spur, and died instantly.

The sting isn't normally fatal, it's very rare for someone to die.

I will truly miss the guy, he's the one who got me very interested in pursuing a career in zoology.

I feel horrible for his wife Terri, and his 2 young children Bindi and Bob.

                  RIP Steve Irwin.

Actually, a reporter asked John Stainton(one of Steve's close friends), if Steve pulled the barb out himself. John said that it was only a rumor, and that he was offended that the reporter would mention that to him. (I think) the barb was never detached from the ray. and the ray pulled it out.

Yeah I agree completely that is the really sad part. I always thought that one of those crocs that he was always chasing and taunting would finally snap and come after him and that would be his end. Who would of thought that it wouldnt be a big croc that took his life. It isnt funny at all but I bet his last words were "crikey mate that hurts!"

RIP STEVE IRWIN and good luck to the wife and kiddos. Later

"“He died doing what he loved best,” said Irwin’s longtime friend and manager John Stainton, who was with him when he died. “He left this world in a peaceful state of mind. He would have said: ‘Crocs Rule.’ ” " -taken from an article in the Boston Herald. The article also said that the footage of the whole thing was just Steve swimming and the ray stopped then turned.

Even though some sites said that both the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet weren't gonna show some of the episodes of his show for a while, they did last night. It happened to be "Confessions of the Crocodile Hunter." I knew a few things about him, but they showed him saving some guys life once when the guy was stuck on the rocks out in the ocean. Steve just jumped in the water and swam out to him, like he was a member of his family, not a total stranger.

The thing I liked about him, besides the way he talked about the crocodiles(which usually made me laugh), was the way he acted. He was always so full of life, and that's what makes this whole thing so sad. That and leaving his wife a widow and Bindi and Bob without a father.

                          watchin animal planet helps also.

i watched this one show where a guy got stung by a sting ray but they got him some antivenom in time. but there was more left to it than that. there was bacteria that was left in his leg from the sting ray. it started to eat away at the muscle in his leg. leavin a gap about 6" in length in his calf on the back of his leg.

so its not just the poision that can kill you(which VERY rarely happens) but the bacteria thats left behind
