amazing how a whole industry can do as they please and tell you to get fucked if you don't like it......
seems like that since they have SO MUCH to gain in terms of profit, they'd be held more responsible for when things don't click.............and on the 7th day, deevergote rested and called his mom.

Nobody said United should stay in business...
In fact, I vote that they don't.

The FAA also has very specific regulations on weather requirements at the destination. Not right now, but when the aircraft EXPECTS to arrive. If the forecast was calling for severe weather in the Denver area within one hour of the arrival time, that would have altered what they were allowed to do.
At that point they can delay the flight, or they can takeoff in hopes that the forecast is wrong, and the weather will be better.
If it isn't, then the plane legally has to divert and land at an alternate airport that does meet the necessary weather requirements.
Since those planes cost about $3,000 per hour to operate, if the forecast is bad, usually they will either hold the flight, or cancel the flight because it doesn't do any good to takeoff and land at a city other than the planned destination. Then you have to truck people to the destination. That is expensive and the customer gets even more pissed off than they already were.
They usually try to reserve diversions for those airplanes that get stuck in unintended weather once they are airborne. Operations can try to "sway" the crews opinion, but the final authority rests with the Captain.
It isn't uncommon for there to be HUGE lines of storms from the Gulf Coast to the Canadian border in the region that you would have been flying through this time of year.
Even though most people don't know it, an airline crew will NOT touch thunderstorms with a 10' pole. It does happen where there is sometimes just no way to fly around it either.
I don't know if that is the case, here, but it is very probable. I can't get all the weather info from then, so I can't say for sure.
Could they have handled it differently? Absolutely. This is one of the main reasons that United Airlines needs to go out of business. With the good airlines, this kind of mistreatment is uncommon. With United it is common. That is part of what got them in trouble in the first place.
United Sucks.

Unfortunately, it is common with them. They just have an inbred backwards business mentality left over from a time when their was NO competition.
Personally, if I have my drothers, I choose Southwest if they are an option. They still don't serve a lot of cities, but there is a reason they are so financially successful, and it isn't because they are raping their customers.
Frontier is good too.
USAirways/America West is doing well right now, and I have no complaints from the last time I flew them, but they are kind of spotty. It seems like they are either really good or really bad, and it seems to go in spurts. Hopefully for them, they will stay good.
Continental and Air Tran are both supposed to be pretty good. Continental can be a little pricey, and Air Tran doesn't have alot of destinations, so you may not be able to use them.
American is probably OK. I have never had issues with them being unruly towards their customers, and they ARE making money. So they are probably taking pretty good care of their people.
Delta and Northwest have a lot of uncertainty right now. I hated Northwest before that. They were similar to United.
