    Which rotary tool?

A Dremel? Roto-Zip? Something else? Not interested in cordless.

Do I care about variable speed? RPMs? Lots of accessories? I'd use it mostly for plastic and metal projects, not so much wood.

I have a Sears Craftsman and it is still made by Dremel, and all the bits are too. For heavy-duty stuff like exhaust, a rotary tool is going to be pretty weak, you should use something larger scale, whether electric or air, like a grinder.

Yeah, if you are wanting to do quite a bit with it, an air die grinder kit would probably be better (same thing as dremel, just with air)

I purchased a no name cordless one a long time ago, and it still works.. for about 10 minutes for a recharge.

I purchased a corded Dremel brand one a while ago, and it broke within a month. It either is off, or on max speed. No in between.

So, if you have access to an air compressor, I would go that route. You can pick up any of them for pretty cheap at harbour freight if you have one (like 15 for an air kit with attachments.)

OK --- I know nothing about small air compressors really but I do have a Harbor Freight nearby. I always thought air tools took one of those big loud compressors ...

And I have a 4" hand disc grinder; that's how I got one of my rear shocks off LOL. That's a fun tool. Maximum destruction, quickly.

You need a huge compressor to constantly run rotary air tools without being on almost constantly, stick with the DREMEL....
