computers heads, some info needed please

i have a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook that i got for school use. i mainly bought it at the time just to use the internet, write papers, and go on AIM. it's got a Pentium 1.60 GHz processer with 512mb RAM.

i feel like upgrading a bit. i want at least 1gig RAM and if it's possible, to also upgrade the processor (maybe 2Ghz+++), get a large internal HD, and maybe the video card.

would i be better off sending it into Dell for the upgrades, or can a Best Buy do it for a good price?

Well i have no experience with either, i mean ive never owned a notebook and ive never dealt with Best buy but i think if you wanna save some money Best buy would be your best bet. I h8 notebooks...they are usefull but i like to do my own work and all and i never liked the screens on them, although they are getting better.

Generally, notebooks are not upgradeable other than memory and hard drive. How much memory it will be able to take depends on the notebook (how many memory slots, usually only 2 on a laptop, and the largest supported module). I doubt you can upgrade the video card unless it is a very high end unit. and the hard drive is only based on how much you want to spend as 2.5" drives are more expensive than 3.5" drives. I've seen notebook drives up to about 120Gig...

if you need harddrive space, i personally like using external hd's that way all my data is safe and if i use another computer i can just plug that hd into the other computer.

for the processor, if you can find another used laptop processor on ebay or somthing like that that will fit your socket it should work.
someone on extremeoverclocking or some site like that said something about vcore matching or something.

Laptop memory can be done at best buy and places like that. I would recomment to stay away from circuit city though.

wells heres some more information on that upgrade.

theres some free programs around. one of my favorite sites is
www.cpu-id.com I think thats the website. If not just google cpuid.

all the programs there are free and supported well.

the pc wizard allows you to compare the hardware in your computer with others.

The cpu-id tool will help you identiy the socket that you are using. So it might be a quick way to determine what will work.
