    Pontiac GTO to be discontinued

    seemed like a short run

    No Go for GTO
    The Daily Auto Insider

General Motors said it will end production of the Pontiac GTO this summer, the Associated Press reported.

The GTO traces its roots to 1964. It went through seven body styles before it was discontinued in 1974. It was revived as an all-new 2004 vehicle and was produced in Elizabeth, Australia.

The current GTO has a 400-horsepower, six-liter V-8 engine and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds. It starts at $31,990.

A spokesman said GM decided to phase out the GTO because new airbag regulation was going to require a substantial redesign of the instrument panel, and the GTO's Australian-designed architecture is being phased out worldwide in favor of a new platform.

GTO sales have also tapered off. GM sold 11,590 GTOs in 2005, down 14 percent from the year before. In January, year-over-year sales were down 33 percent, the story said.

ehh no big loss......might increase demand by ending them....but it wasn't that great compared to the older ones.....people just didn't really attach to the newer ones.....

This phase-out is NOT by any means a loss. GM is doing the world a great favor. The GTO stopped being produced in 1974, and it was NEVER brought back to life. What GM did was akin to the following:

My grandmother died. She stays dead for a while. I dig her back up and prop her up with some sticks. I have a 2 year old kid take some crayons and draw a life size picture of her across a bunch of pieces of paper. I take the pieces of paper and FUCKIN' DUCT TAPE THEM TO A GORILLA AND MAKE IT WALK AROUND.

Hey look, my grandma's back to life!!!....uh, no.

With a curb weight 1000 pounds heavier than our cars, took quite a bit to get it moving (3720).

Domestics finally get cars that are popular, and dont look too bad, and they discontinue them.

            srt-4 (replacement makes me puke)

I love the look of the new challenger, but that thing will probably sell great, so they will cut it.

I agree with ya, but at least people actually wanted the car. It was heavy as hell, and the worst decision was to name it a GTO, especially when it was just a rebadged whateverthehellitwas from australia.

I actually kinda liked it... but it wasn't a GTO. It was as much a GTO as the new Malibu is a Malibu... or a Monte Carlo is a Monte Carlo... Well, at least it had a V8 and was RWD!

What GM needs to do is bring back the Camaro/Firebird. Those cars have spawned classics in just about every generation.

I still don't know why Dodge is getting rid of the SRT-4. That's the best sport compact car created by any US manufacturer... well... ever. The new one may be more powerful, but it's hideous. I don't want power if it's in a fugly looking body... unless I drop something powerful into something OLD and fugly!

i can't even tell the GTO from a fucking previous gen grand priz gtp or whatever that supercharged one was. also we don't have them in canada, so i've only seen 2. but still, it so closely resembles the GP. i remember back in like, 99 when that concept came out at the motor show....it was orange, had 3 silver accent lines, and a fucking badass grille/light assemble....that's how they shoula made it. it was really tank.

EDIT: thank you for 2 seconds of searching on google, this is the bitch i'm talking about. didn't have to be exactly that, but something close.

about the srt-4...it's still pretty ugly. just like the wrx was from 02-last year....just admit they're only cool cause they're turbo. really aren't that pretty. i don't give a second look to any SX2.0 or whatever...so i don't see why a hood scoop and a snail should get to droling. same for the 2.5rs...LAME by any means. slap on turbo, and shit i want one. they're good, and the wrx is still much nicer, and the new ones are cool, good cars, but only got snail appeal.

I think the new wrx's (06) are pretty ugly. Older ones are nicer.
