Top Gear is coming to the U.S.A — but it’s probably not what car enthusiasts are expecting. Top Gear is a popular TV show and magazine from Britain that is nothing short of gospel to a huge audience of car fans around the world. The TV show is broadcast by many networks in various countries, but has always had a rocky road in the United States. Last year, the Discovery channel rebroadcast the Jeremy Clarkson-hosted show for U.S. viewers, but this season the the show never came to U.S. shores. But according to the latest Top Gear magazine, Discovery still has plans for the TV show in America. It turns out the rebroadcast of episodes was a mere entree for Discovery’s main plan: to make its own version of Top Gear on US soil. Their own studio, test track, and presenters. A pilot episode has already been filmed, and if the Discovery executives are pleased, a whole season will be filmed. The three presenters will be Bruno, a professional drag racer, John, the “super keen jock,” and Johnny, a former reality show winner. Of course, the U.S. creators couldn’t totally rid themselves of the Brits. Stig was flown to the U.S. and stunned everyone with his blistering runs of a Mercedes CLS 55, Dodge Charger, and Ford Mustang around the circuit.

I'd like to be excited about this, but . . . . it looks horrid

I just can't imagine any US version of this show that could come close to the quality of the UK program. Production excellence aside, it's the humor and intelligence of the hosts that make the show so great.

I agree I don't think the U.S. version will ever come really close to the U.K. version. Come on now a formerly winner of some reality show? WTF? Thats what I hate about American shows. They have to select some formerly known actor and winner of some stupid show, that knows nothing about cars and you let them drive some 100 K car. Just because he or she was seen on tv. Like I said U.K.>U.S. Also I think this is a cry from Discovery channel network to rake in money and viewers so they are doing whatever they can desperately to bring in money. They already ripped off shows and make there own version on TLC. Like pimp my ride and a bunch of others I forgot.

Yeah, top gear USA will never be anything like the UK version. I loved the episode about the mustang... to test it (since its an american car), they find the longest stretch of straight road. Then showing it on the map, he says " I am afraid about this part, its a corner, you know being in an American car and all" Maybe thats the reason it didnt work out over here, same way WRC doesnt catch. Auto manufacturers still getting straight line acceleration down, accelerations and cornering, you got to be kidding!

I scrolled past that today, didnt know what it was, but since it was on the country channel, didnt chance it. Guess I missed out on a tobacco dispenser and gun rack installs eh?

actually, they "pimped" a Marine's Semi with a car hauler, the paint they did looked AMAZING...american flag down the side with a bald eagle airbrushed on the sides of the hood.

Yeah I am not expecting any similarities with the UK version, but it will be cool to see the Stig, and maybe they'll have some interesting Stars in a Reasonably Priced Car. Would be cool to see Jay Leno on there. Can't hurt to give it a shot, right?

Bringing this back from the dead. TG US first guests to drive a reasonably priced car are going to be Howie Mandel and Mel B of the Spice Girls. I have tickets to the taping of the Pilot tomorrow and i think i'll pass.
