    I need some network help!

I just got a Linksys Wireless-B router, and a card for my Win98 laptop. I got the router working easily enough with the computer hooked directly to it (the PCI card is going in once I get the laptop working) I can't get the PC card working on the laptop though! The CD that came with the card SAYS it has drivers, but Windows can't seem to find them.

When I open the CD, all I get are 2 folders: WAP11 and WTC11-WTD11. Now, I'm not really sure what that is. I installed all there was to install, and I got one of the config programs running to the point where it was searching for my access point (which I know is working, because my roommate is online on his PSP right now!) No access point found.

Windows did not find a driver for the card, so it's not properly installed.

Can anyone offer any help? I'm not great when it comes to networking stuff, as you can see!

WAP11 and such are Linksys model numbers for their products. Find this number on the PCMCIA card you're trying to use with your laptop, go to www.linksys.com and download the proper drivers for it. Uninstall everything linksys-related that you have on the laptop, reboot, and then install the updated drivers you got from Linksys.

Let me know how it turns out.

You also have to be running Windows 98 SE in order for the card to work. They are not supposed by Windows 98 First Edition..

I went though the exact same crap a while back trying to configure a friend's win98 laptop for a linksys router. It got to the point that I had to have a real time chat with a linksys tech. And finally the card was installed. If I remember correctly, I had to uninstall all the linksys drivers off the laptop and reinstall them. But the tech worked with me the whole way and told me the right way to configure the card. I think I might of messed up when choosing ad-hoc or infrastructure mode.

        Good luck.

And get ahold of linksys if you are still stuck. They will work you through the whole process.

Forgot to mention...get rid of 98 already! I've reinstalled it so many fuckin times on different PCs that I memorized the CD key so thoroughly that I can recall the key faster than I can clearly say it, if that tells you anything...Ditch it and get 2kPro

On my P166 with 32mb of ram and a 2 gig hd? Win98 is pushing it

Adam is helping me get set up with SE. Turns out I think I have the old version, and SE will definitley make things work better!

If I can get this thing online, it'll make it worth the $75 I spent on the computer and wireless card combined

Ouch. I had no idea it was THAT slow. That poor hard drive... all it must do is thrash and thrash while the swap file goes nuts.

Yeah. it's a dog... but for such an old computer it's mint! I'll eventually upgrade the drive. I'm trying to find another 32mb chip for it (it actually has 48 installed now... 16mb soldered on, 32 in a chip... can hold 80 total) I wish I could upgrade the processor, but it's the top of the line for that computer! I don't know if I can fit another board in the case... I'm a desktop guy. Laptops are new to me!

Most are proprietary, so 9 times out of 10 a new motherboard is not going to get into that case without fucking with a dremel, not to mention the power supply and LCD connectors would have to match along with everything else, and they probably wont... I think ASUS made (still do?) laptops that you can pick and choose from their offering of parts to throw in a case.

Ok, for some reason Trillian just croaked onme and I can't get back on IM.

Adam, the version of Win98 I'm installing doesn't say anything about being SE in the install. Is that normal? Everything looks identical to the version I'm replacing...

They do look the same but like I said when you install it, copy the entire Win98 directory to the computer so all of the cab and extra files are on the computer rather than having to insert the CD everytime.

Check the system properties when its loaded.. they do look the same but it'll say Windows 98 Second Edition.

Done and done. I'm on it now

It's amazing how easy it was once SE was installed! Just stuck the card in and it said "Windows just installed this... would you like to do anything else?"

And I confirmed the SE by going to the computer properties and seeing Second Edition there... Whew!

                          Thanks everyone!
