    Computer virus/spyware question

I've had this annoying pop-up that states windows is corrupted of the registry is fucked and I'm supposed to visit some random site to fix it. Ad-Aware doesn't get rid of it and it actually isn't too bad of a problem because when I'm connected through our router, the router blocks the port and it won't pop up. But as soon as I bypass the router and directly connect to the DSL modem, the pop-ups start like crazy.

Well yesterday I was formatting and reinstalling WinXP for a friend of mine on his computer. I had his computer hooked up to our network via the router. He told me today that he had the same things popping up on his new install of WinXP.

So basically my question is this, is it possible for my infected computer to infect his fresh PC? All I transfered from my PC was 4 mp3's were just downloaded the other day. My PC has been infected for a long time.

Well, some programs can send information to other computers, but I don't think it's likely if we're just talking adware/spyware. You need to be using a firewall for one thing, and I would suggest the usual array of anti-apyware etc programs. Such as MS Anti-spyware, spybot S&D, adaware, bazooka scanner. And very important is to run Hijack This. It will list browser hijacks and allow you to remove them. I would recommend posting the results of that scan for analyzing, since there a lot of important things you may delete that are needed. I only get a couple popups and I could block them if it were bad enough. Also while I'm thinking about it, if you know what site is sending the popups, etc. you can add it to your hosts file to block them/deny them.

    Get back at me.

where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

I just found it unbelievable that one day after I did a fresh install of XP, he had the exact same crap I have.

I will get Hijackthis and post the results asap.

                try this site: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?

They are very helpful there. Just be sure to follow all the instructions first in the malware forum before you ask for help.

your router is a real firewall..that why it doesnt do it when your connected...i also have mcafee suite and i like it..i know i know some folks hate it with a passion...i also have and would recommned ad-aware by sunsoft..very good with scans and stops browser hijacks..especially since internet explorer is so vulnerable. hijack this is ok, but if bug or infected file is in reboot or boot ini than it gonna reload evertime you start your pc. and another tip..when you download free anti-spyware your downloading adware from that company. so get a good program and make your your windows firewall is on if you dont have one. goodluck anyways

spyware doctor > spybot, ad-aware, and MS anti-spyware combined

trust me, you guys have to try this program

just go to www.download.com and search for "Spyware Doctor"

Ad-Aware will not get rid of this nasty bug. I'll try Spyware Doctor and see what that does.

I delete the stuff manually in Safe Mode. If you have XP w/the firewall you won't get any Spyware to begin with...I got that update and I haven't had a problem in months.

I will try that one brown asian kid, thnx
And as far as firewalls go, I have a linksys router/firewall, connected to a dedicated smoothwall firewall (read: a separate computer that works solely as a firewall) connected to my PC which is running zonealarm. I never much cared for windows built in firewall. Oh and btw even with all that protection some crap gets through, you can't block everything, it's important to simply be on top of your pc's PM.

Yeah I was going to say that having a firewall doesn't mean you are compeletely safe. I royally fucked my system when trying to find some Genesis Roms. I got that nasty Aurora bug.
