I looked it up and the showed very vivid images. And somepeople are plagued by these spells and happen to them often. I am not usually a superstitious type but I felt this today and I believe it. thank you for your concern about my parents. I was only 19 when my mom was murdered and My dad died this January.

sleep paralysis is a creepy scary thing. hasn't happened to me to that extent, but i have often felt myself waking up but fighting to do so - my breathing stifled, my heart just slow...

i know that sometimes , when you get that "not breathing" or "falling" feeling and jolt awake suddenly, it's because your body is trying to combat falling into too deep a sleep too fast ...

i am prone to EXTREMELY vivid and realistic dreams, so bad that sometimes i will go about my life the next day thinking that something happened when it didn't ... because most of my dreams are so close to my life that they're that believable!!! and even the ones that seem unusual aren't so nuts that i wouldn't fall for it - i think that while dreaming my brain gets confused along the lines somewhere and starts trying to interact in the situation, to have an effect on what is going on - so later i don't know what is or isn't

              ...

              breathing is deadly underwater...

I have had this happen exactly as you've described it. I was having some weird dream about being chased by witches/demons whatever and i woke suddenly. When i opened my eyes i was indeed in my dorm room lying on my back, but when i tried to get up, i could'nt i wasn't even able to lift my head up off the bed to look around. It was like COMPLETE and TOTAL paralysis. I started to bug out and wanted to yell for help...no voice...

I was panicking! All i remember was trying to convince my self that this was part of the dream and that i wasn't really awake (even tho i kinda knew that i was). I managed to get myself to close my eyes and attempt to go sleep. I think i finally dozed off, then when i woke (in the same exact position as before) i was able to move and i jumped outta bed totally relieved.

                  Some scary stuff man...

appearently, it only happens when you lay on your back... its supposed to be related to narcolypse(sp?). I also read that it happens to a lot of other people. I tell you what, its still scary as hell...

DUDE!!! I seriously thought I was the only one this happened to. It happens to me a lot... maybe a few times every month. It's not exactly like yours but I'm lying there sleeping and it's like I wake up... but I can't talk, can't move, can't do anything. I try so hard to move, open up my eyes, or talk... but I can't do it. That's when I start freaking out and then all of a sudden I wake up, instantly calm, and it's like nothing happened. A few minutes later I just fall back asleep. Glad I'm not the only one!
