    Who here owns a house?

It's the day of stupid questions! I'm just wondering who else is in my boat. I bought a house about a year and a half ago, and since then I've gotten much more into my car(s)! It sucks having so many bills to pay while trying to keep up with such an obsession... I mean hobby.

So, who owns a house? Not a condo, not an apartment... a HOUSE. A structure that is free standing on a plot of land that the government is kind enough to let you think you actually own. A plot of land that you spend hours maintaining.

I just finished college... In fact, I graduate today at 6pm! Owning a house probably isn't that hard to do when you have a real job, but I've been working part time as a waiter to keep up with things. Thankfully I have a roommate that pays half!

I kind of own part of the house I live in. I'm on the owner's will so I will be getting a piece of it. I'm going to try and buy the house somehow when he passes away. He is up there in age so that could be anytime. However, all you Californians will know that buying a house in this state is harder than hell. Mostly because a shack goes for $300K. My roommate bought this house for 130K in 93 and it just appraised for almost $400K.

I hope I can get this house though. I really have gotten very attached to this place. Plus the whole house was renovated this year(some I did myself) and I've done a lot of improvements to the yards. It was a jungle when I first moved here!!! And, the hot tub is coming Monday! Woohoo!

                hey congrats!!!

yeah we don't own yet, but after all the money we save when he goes off to iraq this summer, we'll be buying a house this time next year.

but hey, deev was it hard getting a mortgage at your age? did you need to put a lot down and did you also need to pay the closing costs up front? just wondering since this is our plans for the pretty near future

I wish I could own a house, here in NY property taxes are way too high for any grads to afford, unless you buy some shithole in the worst neighborhood. I'd like to own my own house one day, I give you credit for getting that going. I wouldn't be able to decide though...CB7 vs. Bills? TOUGH ONE.

You won't have tp pay shit up front. You got the V.A. to back your loan since your husband is military. Well unless you already wasted your V.A. loan on something lavish, like a dodge viper or something. Hope you have good credit.

I had my stepfather cosign on the mortgage so I could get a 6% rate rather than 7% (which is what I was approved for by myself). My house cost me $98,900 (which was a steal... my realtor handed me the keys and offered 125,000) but I put $35,000 down (a loan from my mother, the remains of her inheritance... I'm paying her back $50,000 when I sell). I had a chance and jumped on it. Thanks to my hefty downpayment and my awesome roommate, I'm able to keep things going and still play with the cars. I'm still trying to convince my fiancee to let the roommate stay for a while after we're married (she graduates with me tonight, so with her expected income, plus half the mortgage covered, we could save a bundle!)
Anyway, no, it wasn't hard. I had the downpayment and co-signer though, along with perfect credit and a kickass realtor. You shouldn't have much trouble though, especially if you get a chunk of money to put down once your husband gets back from Iraq. Are you planning on staying out west, or will you be moving back this way?

Nycxeracer, thanks man. It's a pain in the ass paying for everything! That's why I'm always looking for cheap deals I'm hoping to get a decent job that will pay better than waiting tables while I'm in grad school. My fiancee doesn't have any immediate plans for grad school herself, so her income will make things more comfortable as well. Getting into my place was the best thing I could have done in the long run... It takes care of a lot of things, and it's a great bargaining chip when it comes to getting loans (taking out a loan on the house for the wedding) and when I sell, I'll make a nice profit.

Fizz, that's awesome that you're building your own. I wish I was able to do that! I can't even figure out how to build a garage! If you're capable of doing something like that, then that is the best thing to do. You'll get exactly what you want, and you can take 100% pride in it.

I have my own home, paid 118,000 for it 1,070 sq. ft. and it sits on a 57x190 lot. I love it best investment a person can make... no garage yet but I will be throwing one up in the near future.

taking out loans to get married is the worst thing ever.. :shakeshead:

you will soon find out that having a room mate and being married isnt fun... haha

me and my wife got approved for 200k mortgage with no downpayment, but had to come up with closing and had to have 2 payments in reserve in our savings account.

we'll be buying out here, a nice little project house, fixing it up and turning around and selling it. we'll most likely do this at least twice before we leave for another duty station... after california we're moving to Japan <fingers crossed>... and if we ever decide to come back to the US, we'll be back in the Northeast fo sho ... it's where i belong

but yeah, i've always been keen on the idea of property investment, especially in houses that may need just a little work to shoot their value up... like buying auction cars and fixing them up only on a larger, more profitable scale - so thanks for the tip

                            and a ps:
try your best not to borrow against your equity for your wedding. if you're saving that much, just pay for the wedding outright... i know of a million ways to make an awesome wedding for not a lot of dough

True... It just seems to be the easiest way though. We're both graduating, and finally have a chance to get real jobs. At the moment we're both waiting tables, and making just enough to get by. With a $15k loan, we could have it paid off in no time. What we save from now till then, plus the wedding gifts, will probably leave us with less than half to repay.

I wouldn't mind going cheap, but she wants a nice reception. All I can do is try to keep the numbers down! $50 a head isn't horrible anyway... We shall see! I'll probably be asking on here for ideas shortly anyway
