Over revved the car last night ... hello 8k+ rpm's

So I totally scared the shit out of myself last night. My girlfriend was egging me on to go fast so I was like ah whatever. Going from 3rd to 4th I hit a bump in the road and accidentally slammed it in to 2nd for like half a second. I swear it looked like the rpm's shot past 8000 because the needle was almost straight down. It was really, really fucking loud ... sounded cool though. It makes me want to have my f22 rev that high because it sounded really nice even though it scared me. Has anyone else ever done this?? I know I can't be alone....

I mis-shifted while tuning w/busted.. I dunno what the hell i hit, but it was quite a big bump, I just caught the edge of 2nd gear, so it made a special grinding sound.

a couple times, actually - i'm not always good at judging a down shift although i haven't had the problem for a few months now - but i have mistakenly shifted from say 5th into 3rd when i only need 4th - i can remember two specific times on the way X-country...

        scared myself, too

        breathing is deadly underwater...

over rev = floating vlaves... Since it's a interfearence engine you may have bent a few valves doing so. It would be a good idea to get it compression tested as soon as you can to see weather or not you bent any.

WTF is that? I think you might be trying to say "inferior" but who knows.

I gotta agree though, depending on how long and how high you were revving, you could have slightly warped/bent something like a valve or something. A compression test wouldnt hurt just to be safe.

The technical term is "interference engine," because the valves open so far into the cylinders (they "interfere" in the piston space) that if the valve timing isn't perfect (or you over rev and float the valves), the valves can be struck by a piston.

              non interference:

Yeah, I know it's dangerous for the valves and all. That's why I was freaked out afterwards. I've been driving the car all day though and it's running just fine. I have a compression tester at my house so I'll probably do it when I get home in a couple weeks.

no problem what so ever. don't worry about any valve just worry about some rod stuff lol if the timing is correct the piston won't hit any valve. but if u screwed up some tie rods then that is another problem.....
are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet

When I went to the dyno I figured out my tach is lying to me by 500rpm. If you bring the car all the way to 8000rpm on the tach, the dyno computer shows only 7500rpm. Lots of cars are like this from what I found out later... For those of you with chipped ECU's with no rev-limiter... Feel free to 'scream' all the way to 8000!!
