SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 17 year-old high school student faked the theft of his 2002 BMW M3 in order to collect insurance money to upgrade to a Bentley, police said on Thursday.

The teen, a student of Skyline High School in Sammamish, a suburb of Seattle, had reported the car stolen earlier this week, said Michael Chiu, a spokesman for the police in Bellevue, another suburb located between Seattle and Sammamish.

Police in another town found the $47,000 BMW being stripped and arrested four suspects, who connected the teen to the theft, leading to his arrest.

"That investigation led us to believe that he wanted to upgrade to a Bentley," Chiu said.

Bentleys, featured frequently in U.S. hip-hop videos, have a suggested retail price of $160,000 for the Continental GT coupe and $240,000 for the Arnage sedan.

The BMW was in the name of the teen's mother but was used as his vehicle, Chiu said. The student was released to his mother, and prosecutors are considering charges.

i read that story a few days ago on cnn.com... doesn't seem to good of a story, as it's lacking a lot of info.

how does one figure to go from a 47k car to a 160k car? all it says is that the kid wanted to upgrade, but there's no mention of how he planned to do it.

and of course it's not his car in the first place, so had the plan gone through as far as replacing the vehicle, the check would be made out to the mother...

reminds of this kid i knew..car wasn' stolen but he had just picked up a brand new 98 M3(light blue), and was driving along the BQE talking on his cell phone. anyways, wasn't paying attention and smacked right into a garbage truck. all i know was that his parents bought him another M3(black) the day after coz they didn't want to bother fixing it. for you rich folks

I can completely believe that story... I've come across a few rich kids (and not even THAT rich!) that have absolutely no sense of reality. I worked with a 17 year old girl with a brand new RED cougar. She had smashed it up 3 times in 5 months, and her daddy fixed it for her each and every time. Guaranteed the body work has cost more than the car itself by now, if she even still has it (which I doubt!) I can't imagine what the REALLY rich kids must be like... kids whose parents give them BMWs and stuff...
