    That kid on your street.....

I remember having a fart can when I was 17, but I do remember being respectful around my home so my neighbors didn't hate me too much and call the cops. Other parts of town or in tunnels though I'd crack on it all the time! Where I live now is a very bumpy 5km road that loops back to the main road at each end. Very very bumpy with dips and holes from where the road sunk in. Where culverts are you have to go on on one side to not scrape with a normal car.

There is one kid down the road (I think he is in his 20's) that lives on a dirt road off of my road who has civics with fart cans. I think he is has a swapped B18/H22 in one of them and he may even be knowledgeable with cars. But he is always doing 80kph (50mph) down the road which has a deaf child on it, dogs that run loose, kids who play on it, we walk our dog on it, etc. Heck, my neighbor has a 9 year old boy who puts a wooden jump on the road and jumps it on his bike.

He lives with his grandparents and his dad is a well known body work specialists who worked for Honda and Ford but now owns his own business. His dad use to live on this road too but recently moved; I heard the kid lives with his grand parents as him and his dad do not get along.

The neighbors tried talking to his dad to ask him to slow down. Some put up signs on the road saying "please slow down for our children's sake". People have called the police but they don't care. But still he cracks on this car like he stole it every day, just to jam on the brakes for big dips he will scrape his lowered car on, just to then crack on the gas again. When he pulls out on to the main road all he leaves is black marks and hits the rev limiter.

......... All of this...... didn't bother me as I moved there two summers ago and kids will be kids.

BUT....... since he has seen the car I have in the garage and seen it driving things have changed. He will now do the following since last summer:

    - rev the gas when he goes by my house
    - down shift at my house
    - full throttle through the gears by my house
    - play loud music going by my house

He now seems to wait till he is by my house. If I'm outside working on a car he will do it and sometimes pull the e-brake on gravel on the side of the road. In the winter he will go slow from his house and when he gets near my house spin the tires in all gears (in the snow) so I can listen to the music of his fart can. I think him or his friends with him tried to wave but my face was like (what the the F are you doing flying down the road.....)

I guess i'm getting old (wait... no i am old compared to him) as ........ I have no clue what he is trying to do/prove. Any thoughts? Is this a mating call? WTF is the point of all this?

Obviously i doesn't affect me that much. Some days I think "this is getting old" or "someday he will move". When i first discovered his fart can music my only thought was "why does there have to be one of these kids in every neighborhood?"

Anyone else have one of these kids?

    Mating call. Definitely.

I've had a few enthusiasts on my street, but all have been respectful of me (and each other.) No idiotic driving or loud noise from them.

Yup. I have a kid 2 streets over whos parents bought him a black 2015 wrx. Its "heavily modified" with a front license plate relocator, tinted windows and plastidipped black stock wheels. He does the same shit. Flys past the house, sometimes at over 90mph ( I live on a 25 mph residential street) revs, downshifts, etc. He will get his someday im sure. It pisses me off though. Cause I hope my neighbors realize that I have zero association with him, its not like one of my friends messing around. I might have messed around on a deserted road or on the highway when I was younger, hell I still do now, but I don't do it when there are people around or on a residential street. that's just stupid

        Mating call x2.
If you pick up an Australian accent, then you can do a Nat Geo style flick and post it on YouTube.

Even when I first joined this site, I had enough common sense not to do dumb stuff like that. Over 10 years later, now I really see how childish and unnecessary it is. Flying through the neighborhood is one of my pet peeves. It makes me wish I had a spike strip to put in their driveway.

Most people around me are appliance drivers so they keep their cars stock.

The sad thing is that non-enthusiasts tend to associate ALL enthusiasts with asshats like that. They don't notice the quiet, respectful people... because the quiet, respectful people don't draw attention to themselves. They DO notice the asshats that drive recklessly and make a lot of noise. Therefore, they just assume that all enthusiasts are asshats.
That's one reason I do my best to discourage irresponsible behavior... because it doesn't just affect the idiot doing it. Even if their behavior never results in loss of life, limb, or property, it could still result in unwanted attention by police. Police don't necessarily know who is a responsible enthusiast and who is an asshat (though in smaller towns, they probably know all of the modified cars on sight.) They'll just start noticing ALL of the modified cars, and if they get enough complaints from residents, they'll pay close attention to them. Going 5mph over the limit? Ticket. Muffler too loud? Ticket. Car too low? Ticket. No laws regarding noise or ride height yet? New laws. Ticket.

I live about a mile away from a 65mph highway. The stretch near me is pretty empty late at night. During the summer especially, when I have my bedroom window open, I can hear people racing. It usually sounds like bikes, but I've occasionally heard the obvious wail of a high-revving 4 banger... and less frequently, the roar of V8s. There are only so many hiding spots for police on that stretch, and there's a spot where there's a good 2 miles between on-ramps (spanning multiple jurisdictions), with plenty of places to dip off to avoid attention. That's where my neighborhood asshats seem to go.

I once saw a 350Z and a Camry wipe out on that stretch. Father's Day, 2012 or 2013.

lol @ responses. I really dread the day he comes over to say hi as I hate him already but I don't know him or anything about him.

Haha! Mating call! That dude is coming onto you man. He's got a civic so he wants the D.

He's the reason people hate Hondas. Go let the air out of his tires.

I agree, get a video of it for YouTube so we can flame him for being annoying.

Or just talk to him, man. Just be an adult about it, and maybe he'll realize he's being an asshat.

Honestly, ignoring him would probably be the best option. Any sort of passive-aggressive action would only result in further immature actions... only probably with far more malicious intent.
Talking to him makes sense to anyone that HAS sense... but this kid most likely doesn't! Just as I've experienced (and many of you probably have as well), when you tell someone that they're doing something they shouldn't be doing, they're very likely to get offended. Especially when they're immature. Saying "hey, you shouldn't be speeding down this uneven residential road with a deaf kid living on it!" would probably get a response like "fuck you, hater! i'm in control. my shit has brand new racelands and some sticky summer tires!" (in February...)

This is why I do 5-10 on my road. I putt along and wave to my neighbors and they all love the car. They obviously see that I like to keep it clean too. One of my neighbors even asked to go for a drive in it. I was glad to take him for a drive!

Another note is that there are some serious car enthusiasts on my road for some odd reason. One guy has a shelled Camaro (white and red, roll bars, wheelie bars, slicks, always on a trailer and takes it to the quarter mile 5-10 times in the summer = serious build/family man/volunteer fire fighter), and the other guy has the same setup with a hollowed out fox body. Another guy down the road I talk to has a 1984 firebird that is amazing condition and looks like this.

So I have to say I do believe in karma here. When this little douche breaks down on the side of the road I know none of the neighbors will stop to help him. But I think if I break down there will be plenty of help

                    That's true!

Other enthusiasts can always pick out the posers from the rest. If I saw your car (and I wasn't already familiar with it, or a fan of the CB in general), I'd certainly assume you were a serious enthusiast, willing to put proper time and effort into building and maintaining your car. There's a certain attention to detail that anyone that has ever wrenched on a car (or even hand-waxed one) will appreciate.
Kids with the soot-covered bumper over a poorly-mounted fart can, bouncy cheap-o suspension, and ghetto mods (spraypainted parts, an abundance of trendy stickers, etc...) are easy to identify. As an "enthusiast" (in quotes because I'm using it to cover the serious and non-serious) you are defined by how you build and care for your car. Any true enthusiast, regardless of whether they drive classic, luxury, exotic, muscle, import, etc... should be able to appreciate quality work.

A few months ago, I spotted a decently clean 2nd gen Miata at a shop about a half-mile from my house. Then I noticed that the exhaust had be re-routed to exit at the side of the rear bumper cover. There was a sheet metal plate surrounding the outlet, and the whole thing was covered in soot. I laughed. A couple weeks later, I saw a douchey kid driving it around... and I wasn't at all surprised. Last night, I saw it for sale on Craigslist for $3000.

Why not make an anonymous report to the local police department? Have some other neighbors do the same thing.

I bet when a cop shows up at his door, then he will change his attitude about going by your house like that.

Before I moved I had neighbors like that. I just ignored them and eventually they stopped but I did catch them out at the local "spot" and beat both of them easily. They stopped by my house the next day to talk cars and just bs around and we ended up hanging out often and doing all of our projects together. It could be a win-win to befriend this guy. You get a friend and he gets a mentor. All the stupid behavior would stop soon enough.

Done already. Cops don't care or not there when he does this stuff. They will say "well, we need to catch him breaking the law".

Good point here that I never thought of. Maybe the poor fella just needs some mentoring

I did see him down the road once, stopped behind him at a stop light by accident. I had the 04 TSX. When he cracked on it, I cracked on it, and surprisingly the cars were evenly matched. I was not catching up to him nor was he pulling away. The sight was funny though, his civic loud as fack, smoke pouring out, violent shifts, the TSX ... calm, gentle, smooth. Only time that happened, but I was surprised his car was able to do this.

Maybe that's why he does it. He wants a rematch!

You could also potentially put your car out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind.

Reporting him to the police may do more harm than good, if they're not the type to differentiate between "good" tuners and "bad" tuners. You could end up drawing unwanted attention to yourself!

I guess you don't want him butt hurt about the cop thing.

Do you have security cameras around your house? Maybe show the officers the video of him doing it if you do?

There's got to be a way around it, he's gonna hurt somebody for real.

Neighborhood petition? My neighborhood did this, and the city put up speed bumps & two stop signs.
