Sold my CB7 and it's already inoperable

It's been a while since I posted in here. We haven't had the funds to really put into the CB7 like I wanted. We sold it on Saturday after having her for 5 years. She was the first car that tackled our first timing belt and seals replacement on. Her many leaks and other quirks were annoying, but she really came in handy about 2 months ago when my Fusion was totaled. We have a Mazda 5 now and are saving up for a trip up North, so the accord went.

I thought it was in good hands. We know the people we sold it to, but they apparently got it for one of the kids in their neighborhood. This kid who "works" on hondas and loves them. This kid has already blown the clutch. It hasn't even been 2 days. When he pulled out of our yard, I realized that he might have to get used to the sweet spot, but I guess he never did. He has apparently been hot rodding it all over alabama and not shifting when he needed to.

If you guys knew half of the issues I had with this car and still managed to use it as a DD for an entire month straight and then on and off as I pleased (to include some high rpms, but not carelessness), I'm sure you would be in disbelief as well. How does one kill a clutch in less than 2 days?

This was the 2nd CB7 that I have owned and I am always depressed to see one go. I'll be getting me another one that's already tuned so I can just enjoy it....lol

Our cars definitely need to be babied or driven the correct way. ie - a newbie on a clutch can dump/stall/ride all day with minimal damage. But an older car will give out in a few days of this abuse. Sad though that he didn't give the car the respect it needed.

That seems to be the way it goes!

I think I may have banned a guy years ago because he bought a car built by a buddy of mine... and in a matter of weeks, he blew the suspension, destroyed the engine, smashed up the front end, and put the car up for sale. It was a beautiful car before he got to it, and it really made me mad! (I may not have banned him... but I think I drove him away from this site!)

It's sad. To anyone that isn't a CB enthusiast, these cars are just beaters... and they're treated as such. Even the nice ones.

I'd stay away from a car that's already been modified, though. Unless you know the car, know the seller, and understand exactly how and why everything was done. I've seen plenty of people buy someone else's project that looks nice, and ends up being a major can of worms!

It sounds like you dumped a car on someone that had a ton of problems, were surprised when it lasted a whole month in your own care, and now you're upset that the kid only managed to wear out the clutch? A clutch swap isn't major work. A bad ground can make a car "inoperable."

Seems like you could have been more informative to the seller in regards to the condition of the car. Or, I am just missing part of the story.

I had the car for 5 years and took care of it as much as I could. Did I rev it up a couple of times, yes, but I know better and I knew the issues beforehand and I just know not to dog a car out especially if it isn't built for that type of stuff. I gave them a list of everything that was wrong with it before we handed it over. He has it back on the road now, but I am really amazed at how quickly someone can destroy a car. Maybe I get too emotionally attached to cars...

I typed up 1 page of issues that the car had to let them know what was wrong with it. To my knowledge, the clutch still had plenty of life. I purchased the car 5 years ago in basically the same condition as we sold it except for a few repairs that were needed.

This is usually the point I make to my husband when he brings up the fact that I should buy a built one already. As if we haven't learned many a lesson from buying classic VWs that are already built and crap out on us. I would rather take my chances now in buying a built car since I can't seem to save money for parts or find the time to work on cars. Running has taking over my life.

If you buy a car that's already built, be sure you know enough about everything that has been modified to tell the difference between quality mods and cheap, lazy ones. There are a handful of modified CB7s in this group that I would truly feel comfortable buying. Even those, however, are going to have their quirks that the owner has gotten used to overlooking.
My own car, for example (not the finest example of careful modding, mind you...) My radio isn't secure, so a hard launch will drop it on my shifter. My back seat is for show... as I can't remember where I put the seatbelts (somewhere in my basement!) and the seat isn't bolted down. My main relay is dangling, because I've been rotating 3 junkyard relays... still not sure if any of them really work properly. I could keep going...

Ha! I think the relay was dangling in mine as well. Oh well....lol I appreciate you giving me some advice on that. It was hard to make my list of things to give to him because I had forgotten so much. I had to remind myself to tell him that the clutch switch was bypassed. I will be very careful in my choosing.

My old frost white 91 coupe, I had for 6 months and restored it from certain death (blown headgasket, all 4 mounts shot, bald tires, blown shocks) was sold and about a week later, got hit in the rear quarter by an S10.

About 8 months after that, I saw it in my local pick and pull I remember installing the head in that thing over the course of a weekend.....at least I sold it for 2800 bucks! Didn't have too much attachment to it since i made 1500 flipping it.

the guy did put about 50k miles on it according to the odometer in that short amount of time though, so I'm glad it got some use before being put away in car heaven.

At least they put it in the part out section, vs. crushing it. So i feel like bits and pieces of it are still floating around in other CB7s.
