Mighty Car Mods - Turbo old engine

    Not sure if you guys have caught part 1 and 2 of mighty car mods latest videos, but they take a 200,000km 1990 Mazda Miata and toss a 7psi turbo on it without any modification to the engine... I've only been here a short while but I take from the veterans here is;

    1) modify suspension without quailty shocks you will lose control of your car and plow through school yard of children killing everyone and possibly cause mass starvation in another country.

    2) Turbo an old NA engine without forging new pistons, connecting rods, maybe cylinder sleeves and your engine will detonate taking out 2 square city blocks killing everyone in a 2 mile island after the fallout hits.

So.... has anyone on this site truthfull done a turbo mod like this? I was watching this and thought for sure this Miata was doomed for detonation next episode... thoughts?

ive seen lots of old engines that got boosted without touching the internals. Dont recall any of them blowing up

Some of the members here allege that they have turbo'd their high mileage engine on stock internals. Usually people on the site are on a tough budget, so some choose to incorporate used components for their set up. One set up I can think of is using a DSM manifold and Turbo. Most will say the t25 is too small. Some will say the 14B is too small but from what I read on the forum, the 14B is the best contender for a budget. (because again I state that members here allege to have turbo'd their car with a 14B and actually improve MPG)

There is so much misunderstanding and misinformation in this thread that it makes my head ache.

The information on this forum is specific to the CB Accord. It may apply to other cars, it may not. It is not necessarily universal.
The F and H engines commonly found under the hood of an enthusiast's CB have fairly fragile cast aluminum pistons. They will fail under boost. It may take some time, or it may happen disturbingly quickly. It has little to do with the age of the engines. It is the way the pistons are made. They are great for their intended applications, but they won't hold up to boost for long.
The t25 IS too small. Period. The 14b was once considered to be too small, but it has since been proven (by toycar) that it is suitable for a mild turbo setup on our 2.2L engines.
In terms of MPG improving with turbo... that's more about the tune than anything else. The improved MPG came from driving very carefully while remaining out of boost.

As for suspension... if you've got too little sense to understand what happens when your suspension does not function properly, you should at least have enough sense not to throw a veiled insult at the more intelligent members of this forum.

x2 thin ring lands and high silicon content cast aluminum and poor tuning is the downfall to out Honda engines. Like mentioned not every one will blow up right away. and the fact that one person can have one last 1 year doesn't mean they all will ether. The majority of people who cheap out on turbo's also cheap out on tuning. This is the end of any engine.

The reason you see most members say these mods will catastrophically fail. Is more than likely due to the members lack of knowledge in automotive or lack of money for proper build parts.

Sure it's cool to make a 200k engine run to 300whp on a budget..... as long as that budget includes the proper parts and a good tune. You won't run this off a stock ECU no matter how hard you try.

Miatas are known to handle turbos pretty well. It has a iron block, 9.4 compression and oil squirters for the pistons.

That might be great, for Miatas....but this community is dedicated to a completely different car. I'm not familiar with Mazda/Ford engines(but I do know their transmissions aren't worth their weight in soda cans), but I do know that our rotating assemblies are not meant for thar abuse for an extended amount of time.

While I'm not familiar with this group I'm sure when they selected a car for their video they probably selected the one that put their best foot forward.

                Who's talking about Ford?

Also, you can slap a turbo on a bone stock F22A, H22A, whatever... tune it properly, and it might be awesome for months. Until a ringland breaks. And it will happen.

You mean to tell me you don't know that several of Mazda engines/transmissions are made by Ford or are either joint ventures?

Yes, I am well aware of Ford's affiliation with Mazda. However, we were talking about the Miata, specifically the 1st gen... which has either the 1.6L B6ZE or the 1.8L BP. Both are purely Mazda engines. Not developed by Ford in any way (though the BP was used in the Escort and Tracer...)

Deeve, I wasn`t trying attack anyone on the forums which is why I opened with an outlandish example of tragedy as I`m sure nobody has said that; on the flip I was viewing this tired old 1.6L MX5 motor as the same as tossing a turbo on a CB and from your info above you stated extremely valid reasons why the Miata is more up to the task.
Only meant to stir up a discussion, possibly a prediction of how long this Miata will actually run for... apologies if that rubbed you wrong. I`ll try to be more sensitive in the future.

It wasn't you. I had just come from another discussion full of "my boi did it and it wurks", so I was quick to snap. My Flash player was also malfunctioning, so all I saw was "everyone says we can't turbo stock engines, but these guys did it." I thought "oh, great... another thing for people to throw into their argument."

Welllllll I have a buddy named Nick Paul and he prides himself in his junkyard Turbo builds for 25-50$ and his cars run great!!!!

                              For about a month......

Truth is, as stated before, you most certainly have to building it right or have it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing to get any longevity.

I mean sure it's cool to be Turbo but don't be like my friend and have to swap engines every other month. 8)
I wake up in the morning and piss excellence!
