Euro owners bash "ricers" with yellow bulbs

I was searching for what bulb type is on my lady's E46 Sedan fog lights and found this.

    WARNING!
This is one of the most ignorant and UNINFORMED posts I've ever come across on the internetz. =P Acura's have been coming from the factory, even stateside, with yellow fogs/highbeams since the 86 Legend IIRC. Vigor's, CL's, TL's & RL's all had them. So how did we RIP them off? Old school and even new school toyotas and lexus have them, its nothing new.

I honestly cant think of ONE oldschool euro car that came with them from the factory in the mid 80's. I think maybe old school Mercs had them, but nothing that is still on the road and running today that is worth mentioning.

Funny, as the yellow trend hit this site, everyone was referring to it as a Lexus thing.
However, Lexus itself is a rip off of Mercedes Benz (the original LS400 an almost blatant copy of the E-class.)

Yellow fogs have a purpose. It's not just for looks. Silly Euro owners think we're trying to be like them.
        Enjoy your electrical problems, bros!

To be fair, yellow bulbs in the high beams do not make "Euro fogs"

Deev you know the power of quality lighting. IIRC you have a retrofit on your CB. Is that thing running yet???

            It's always been running.
Is the clutch working yet? No.

i hate the yellow fog/high beam trend, it looks cheap and ricey (IMO). I personally think this has no point, i want my high beams to do what they're suppose to do when i use them.

what bugs me more is when people drive in the day time with their lights on to show off their HID's or yellow high beams (not referring to vehicles that come with day time running lights). I guess i'm just old and light things like this bug me

I feel the same way. I think the yellow high beam is stupid. Yellow fogs, I get. They're actually more effective when cutting through fog. That's why they came from the factory that way. People are doing the yellow high beams to emulate the cars that have fogs located in the same area, such as DA Integras.

A functionless modification that actually looks good is cool.
A functionless modification that pretends to have function looks stupid.
A functionless modification that removes the functionality from an otherwise useful feature is absolutely idiotic.
A functional modification that adds a useful feature is cool.
A functional modification that adds a useful feature AND looks good is really cool.

People seem to do very few of the last one.

So I've never played with the colours of the headlights/fog lights in my car save for black housing my headlights (which I did not notice any ill effects from doing) and when I got my first exr in 2000, I put a set of those color changing bulbs that would look like a slightly different color depending on what angle you were viewing them from. I got a ticket for having those bulbs in my car because they were apparently illegal here. I changed them out and never ran anything but regular replacement bulbs since. If having yellow fogs is actually good for visibility, why wouldn't having yellow high beams serve the same purpose? Other than fogs typically being mounted as low as possible on the front of your car to get the light under the fog, how could it be bad to run yellow high beams? I do believe in function over form, so if its just a looks thing then pretty sure I don't think I'll be using yellow bulbs. Although I do like the look of the diy black housed low beams with the yellow painted reflectors in the high beams.

Yellow light doesn't travel as far, but it offers less glare in fog and rain. Yellow high beams wouldn't throw light as they're supposed to, so they'd be less effective. Yellow fogs don't glare as badly on fog and rain, so they're more effective when used as intended.

Ok makes sense. So what about the yellow housed high beam? I can't see it making a drastic light reduction as its a fairly light color. And it's pretty much perfectly transparent.

I don't think that does much to change the output, just the way the car looks. The high beam output may be compromised a little, but not so much that it'd be bad (if done correctly.) I don't care for the look myself, but I don't feel that it falls under the category of decreasing the functionality of the system.

Yellow high beams can provide a small benefit. First, you must understand how the human eye works. We actually see yellow light more efficiently (being that we evolved living under a yellow sun and the refraction of blue light into the atmosphere, yellow light is more prominent on Earth) Yellow lighting adds increased contrast to the human eye; which allows us to see fast moving objects better than with other colors of lights. Therefore, human eyes work more efficiently with yellow light. However, normal car headlights include yellow light in their spectrum. This leads to yellow headlights having minimal benefits over normal colored headlights.

Mods that look cool and are actually useful tend to be expensive........
