    Just had a scary situation

Hey cb7, I was just driving home from work with my wife and I started hearing this really strange knocking sound from under the front driver side. When I pressed the breaks, turned the wheel to the right, or accelerated the sound went away. As I was driving it got louder and I started to panic while trying to figure out what it could be.

Alignment issue? No, the wheel wasn't turning or tugging in either direction. I pulled over once, didn't see anything under the hood or near the wheel/ tire. I pull away. Drive a little further, the sound gets loud enough that I pulled over into the steepest inclined shoulder I ever went to. Got out, saw nothing. Pulled away. This time however, as I was returning to the road I heard and felt a knock. The road was 4 ~ 5 inches higher than the grass, so I thought something was moved.

Tried to keep driving, and the noise was WAY too loud to ignore any further. I pulled over, pulled out the jack and iron, and started looking around. To my relief and utter surprise, TWO of my three lug nuts were not fastened! The wheel was falling out of balance as I drove! What the fudge! I have been using three studs on that wheel since I bought the car and never had this problem.

As I thought about it, a week and two days ago I tried out this new tire and wheel place near my home to install and mount my tires / wheels. Now, a lot can happen in a week and two days, but I canceled the idea of someone unscrewing my lug nuts in a parking lot, or any sort of "natural causes". I have had the car serviced at multiple places and took wheels off myself and NEVER have I had the lug nuts be loose enough that they start to come off!

Anyway I fixed the problem, drove home post- terrified, and decided to share this with you guys.

Why the hell didn't you have 4 wheel nuts on in the first place?

One of the studs broke off. I already have a replacement now, but realistically three studs was never an issue on it's own. As long as all three were tight I had no problems.

I don't understand why people don't replace them when they break or become bad. I mean paying 2 bucks for a new stud is cheaper than the deductible on the car insurance to have it repaired after and accident, assuming that you survived, so this should be a no brainer for everyone.

I bought a whole new hub assembly to replace all four. Didn't get around to it, but I certainly will asap. Still, I want to stress that lug nuts do not become undone just because you are using one less than four studs. This was not a problem that I can just blame on this single missing stud. The issue here is that the lug nuts were unwinding as I drove. Would having four studs and four lug nuts prevent that? Possibly, but when you're talking about 2/3 being unscrewed while 1/3 remains tight it's hard to chalk up to coincidence.

If i understood your original post correctly, you used a new tire place to replace some of your tires? Could it be possible that they did not torque the lug nuts to spec?

Yes, that is what I was getting at. I'm not outright blaming the people who did the job since , as it is said, you never know. I was thinking about how I have had the wheels and tires serviced at many locations including my own garage and have never come close to something like this. *sigh* I'm happy I'm ok and the car isn't damage. I wasn't really being objective by bringing this up, I was just shooken up and wanted to share that with my cb7 freinds.

Actually while working, theres this one place that sells gently used tires and i have noticed that they have a sign posted that says to recheck the lug nuts on any cars with aftermarket wheels one day later. Maybe they have had past experiences where people were coming back and saying that they didn't tightened them and caused for them to wreck and all that jazz.
