It's not a donation. It's paying $5. Outright.
Purchasing a name change for $5.
A big reason for it is that it acts as a deterrent... essentially, preventing everyone from constantly changing and causing chaos!

I've had people throw their "donations" back in my face in the past. I'm grateful for donations, but such things do not grant you special treatment, or allow you to break the rules.
