    The verb "to be"

I was just wondering, are there languages that omit this verb?

I often see things like "transmission needs fixed", or "brake pads need replaced". In English, it would be "needs TO BE fixed" or "needs TO BE replaced"

I'm just wondering if this is nothing more than laziness or a lack of education, or if it's because the person typing is used to speaking a language where such a thing isn't used.

My mom tells me that is how the German language is. She was in Germany for 6 years and her best friend was an older German lady. She would spend hours at her house and they don't use TO BE and other such words in their language. Atleast that's what I am pretty sure I remember her telling me.

EDIT: like for example someone in the US might say "I am going to the store" in Germany a direct translation would be "I go store."

In Swedish there are no equivalent for "to be". Same goes for Finnish, it is simply left out and just the verb is used. For example "the car needs wash" directly translated.

To speak perfect English (or type perfect English) is like talking or typing in monotone to me. It has no characteristics of the person saying what is said and to me it’s boring. It has no personality; it’s like listening to an ATM.

For me it’s impossible to speak (or type) without an accent or "style". It’s who I am.

I think a lot of you would find it hard to understand what I say half the time. Call it lazy or whatever. It doesn’t matter because it is what it is and that’s me.

In my day to day life I talk to people who talk like me. That’s why I communicate the way do. If someone was to ask me to type or talk different that would be like asking me to quit smoking but hold a cigarette all day. I live in Missouri so I talk like a Missourian. It’s not that I’m uneducated but I’m country. I couldn’t change that if I wanted to. I don’t know anything else.

With that being said I want people to know that I try fucking hard with my communication on here. Sometimes I type a word that I don’t know how to spell into Google, get the correct spelling and cut and paste it on here. Or I cut and paste it in Microsoft Word, let spell check fix it then paste it back on here. I do this because its polite to the people I’m talking to and it helps people understand what I’m saying.

That's beyond the point of what I'm saying, though.

I'm not complaining about it. Not yet, anyway. Just looking for a reason WHY. If it's something that comes from another language (such as Spanish... I know we have quite a few Spanish speakers on here) then I can understand. It's like a typed "accent". Or if it's just laziness... because I know I've seen it done by people that I'm quite sure don't speak any language but English.

                    LOL!!!

If they only speak English it is definitely laziness.

                    However,

                    like Ryan said...

brakes need fixed is a southern way of speaking.

I think it would usually be "brakes need fixing" but it could be "brakes need fixed".

In any case, im pretty sure other languages leave it out or it get's lost in translation, so i'd say that's the issue with ESL people.

There's also the aspect of the online grammar trend. The abbreviations are excessive now, lazy typing is common, and to most (even myself) simply do not care to speak properly as I do in real life. On this board I make an attempt because I think its one of Deev's Pet Peeves (ha.., what a funny saying).

Other places I use words like cuz, bc, np, fixin, get er done.

the only time i am "lazy" in my typing is in a text message so long as the person on the other end knows what i'm talking about. if i am posting on any forum or even Facebook i would rather write the entire thought out. besides i am pretty fast at typing and would just assume type things out.

ALSO, that still doesn't have anything to do with what his question was. He wanted to know what languages don't use TO BE and other such words.

OMFG, I HATE that. Anytime I hear someone say "cray" without following it with "fish", automatically deserves a punch in the face from me.
