Has anyone used the ePSXe PS1 emulator with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit?

It's a lousy rainy day out, and I'm really wanting to play some old PS1 games. I don't feel like digging out my PS2 and hooking it up!

At the moment, I'm trying to play Final Fantasy VIII. I have the actual CD in the drive. I've ripped that CD to an ISO using Nero, and I've downloaded a pirated copy as well. The result is the same.

I've used emulators of all types in the past with no problems... mainly with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This is the first I've tried with Windows 7, and it's not working.

I've searched on Google and read plenty of things about running it as an administrator, running it in compatibility mode (WinXP SP3, SP2, and even Win98). No dice. I've restarted my computer, redownloaded the emulator and all plugins. Nada.

I'm able to start the program just fine. I configure all plugins just fine. When I attempt to load the CD or ISO, it instantly says "this program has stopped working". The problem details are:
    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: ePSXe.exe
    Application Version: 0.0.0.0
    Application Timestamp: 483816fa
    Fault Module Name: StackHash_8f51
    Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
    Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000

    Exception Offset: 74544f0d
    OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 1033
    Additional Information 1: 8f51

I've tried other emulators that I've previously used before, such as adripsx and pcsx... but the results are equally bad. I can get it to run in adripsx, but I have no control, and the video looks awful. It has also crashed my computer once, so I'm staying away from that. That program was always one of the more unstable ones in the past anyway.

From past experience (I haven't done it in years) FFVIII is notoriusly hard to get to run clean on any emulator. Have you tried it in a *nix environment? I think that I had the best performance (was still laggy) in linux distros, but it ran on my old PC.

On a side note, what takes longer ... messing with the emulator or pluggin in the PS2...

That, and I don't play games often enough to justify a PS3. I only got my PS2 from my friend because he was selling it cheap (to buy a PS3). I'm an Xbox360 guy, but largely because I was pretty much required to buy one (and Halo 3) to be in my band a few years ago. Band discussions were held via the xbox headset while pwning noobs online.

Anyway, back to the problem... I wonder if it's FF8 that's doing it. I haven't tried a different game. It crashes instantly, so I don't even know if it's reading the game data.

I have no *nix experience, and setting up a *nix partition, reformatting an old drive, etc... would be even MORE work than simply plugging in the old PS2!

Another reason I want to use an emulator is for the instant save states. Can't do that on the console. I can drop the game at any time and pick up where I left off. Perfect for a guy like me that has the attention span of a goldfish, and a neighbor that just drops by randomly to hang out, feed me, or make me work in my yard or on my cars...

My old PS3 slim would but it was running CFW.

Also my PSP1001 (running CFW) will play PSX games too.

Never say never... Sorry for being semi

Back on topic, deev you may need to modify/patch the iso. Are you booting the iso from HDD or mounting the ISO?

I do have a PSP that I've never used... Got it from the same PS3 owning friend, for the same reason I got the PS2... I think he upgraded from the original model to the one that can't be modified, though. It would be kinda rad to play old PS1 games on there. I actually own all the games I want to play, so I wouldn't even be breaking any laws!

Did you just say "rad"... Showing your age man...

Not to pull this further but can you find the model number? As far as I know all PSPs (not PSPGO or PSVITA) can be soft modded with a pandora battery.

                        Bringing sexy back? J/K

Everytime I hear rad I think of Encino Man and Rad-mobile.
                        Weezin the juice!

Enough of that, if you have a PSP and the battery is compatible with PSP1001 I can convert it to a pandora battery for you if you mail it to me and I'll mail it back to you ready to softmod your PSP so you can rock PS1 games on it. I'll be available via PMs, I lost my cell phone either in the pawn shop or junk yard this weekend otherwise I would PM the number to you.

This is the ISO you want for PSP FF VIII, and since you own the original, like you said it is fully legal.

Ya I can't be of much help because until last year, I had a PS2....so I played my PS games that way.

Now I got a PS3 and I don't really have an itch to play any of them.....my NEOGEO emu and NES/SNES + PS3 and Wii and my PC keep me plenty entertained lol.

You can run FF VIII? Did you mod the iso or change settings? How smooth is it? What is your PC setup? Sorry for the list of questions.
